J1 has been made aware that non-Japanese users may be experiencing difficulty reading portions of the J1 PC English and Japanese websites when the user is using Internet Explorer 8 as the web browser.
Specifically, kanji characters will appear as boxes. Roman, hiragana and katakana will appear correctly.
After doing some research, we have determined that it is an "enhancement" in IE8 that makes the browser more dependent on the regional settings.
J1 has added code to our website to adjust the compatibility to IE7, which we hope will make the kanji readable again.
For a more permanent fix for not just viewing the J1 website but also other sites is to install the East Asian character support. This can be found on the Control Panel under Regional and Language options (XP). You may need your operating system CD to install this option.
To the best of our knowledge, this issue is not being experienced by our Japanese users who are using the Japanese version of the operating system (XP, Vista, Win7) as the "East Asian" support is already installed.
As a developer, I am very disappointed that Microsoft would make this kind of change in the browser as it will leave many users who are trying to learn Japanese but have not installed the full Japanese support (e.g. the IME) the ability to read Japanese language sites. I hope Microsoft reverses this decision in a future patch.
J1 and all other REC Networks websites are developed first to be compatible with Mozilla Firefox version 3 in order to assure cross compatibility between Microsoft and non-Microsoft platforms. Fixes are then placed when necessary to support IE7. The J1 website does not support the IE6 or earlier browser.

Today, we have officially renewed our broadcast agreement with Live365 for another year!
100% of the broadcasting fees came in from listeners signed up for Live365 VIP accounts through our website as well as using their VIP accounts to listen as well as from revenue derived from website advertising.
There are a lot of changes coming to J1. Most of them are internal and will have minimal impact on listeners.
Effective December 1, 2009, J1 will have 20 free listening slots instead of the current 25. Our review of statistics show that J1 is normally just below 20 simultaneous listeners for a majority of the day. If all free slots are filled and another person tries to listen, they will receive an announcement that the broadcast is full.
Live365 VIP members are not subject to any restrictions on the number of listeners.
When J1 has full slots, you will see "金" show up in Twitter. If you are a free user, you may have to wait until there's a slot.
With this renewal, the REC J-Project radio stations, past and present have been broadcasting Japanese music for the past 10 years.
