漢字学習 ・ Studying Kanji
今度は僕の漢字能力検定を対象にしている勉強の仕方について書きたいと思います。全くつまらないことでとても面白く読まれそうもないけど、誰かの役に立てるかもしれないし、僕にとってとても身近なことなのでちゃんとこの日記で筆記したいです。こんな風に勉強して、５００字位しか知らなかった、それに音訓の事等把握していなかった、初心者の頃から、４箇月という僅かな時間で日本語能力試験１級に合格できるようになりました。
This time I've decided to write about the methods I use in studying for the Kanji Kentei. Granted it's not a very interesting topic, but there's a chance it might prove useful to some readers, and anyway considering the amount of time I spend doing it in a day it's quite a familiar subject so I want to make sure to record it here. Using this method I was able to go from knowing a paltry 500 or so characters (although at the time I didn't understand the concept of On-Kun readings), to a level capable of passing the JLPT1 in a mere 4 months.

To describe exactly how I study, today I took a few snapshots in the process. The materials I use nowadays are different but the process is about the same.
実と言えば、教材の如何によらず大体の構造は余り変わりません。とはいえ、能率的に平等だというわけではあるまい。僕が利用した本を後述
するので、取り敢えず以下の映像を見本として思えばいいのです。
Actually no matter what materials you use the layout is pretty much the same. However that doesn't necessarily mean that they're all equally useful. I'll mention the ones I used later, so for the time being just think of the following images as examples.
先ずはその教材の使い方から始めたいと思います。漢字学習に関する本の中に色々な種類はあるけど、開いてみると大抵漢字表と練習問題の二つの部分に分けられています。どちらも多様あるので繊細な分析を控えますが、漢字表は勉強の中心となり、とても肝心なのでそれに少し触れようと思います。一般的に音訓、総画或いは筆順、部首、用例等が表示されています。漢字自体の概念を説明するものもありますが、特に必要だと思いません。所詮漢字表だけで足りないので、意味や読み書きを勉強する為に他の媒体を通して参考せざるを得ません。
First of all let's take a look at the materials we'll be using. There are a lot of different kinds of books related to learning Kanji, but when you open them up you'll notice they're generally divided into two sections, a Kanji List and Practice Exercises. There's a lot of variety in terms of both of these, so I won't analyze them into detail here, but since the Kanji List is going to be really important later on I'll touch on it a bit. Generally in addition to the character itself, the On and Kun readings, Stroke Count and/or Stroke Order, Radical, and sample words are listed. Some books also explain the meaning of the individual character, but it's not that important in studying it. In the end the Kanji List alone doesn't cut it anyway, so in order to study the reading, writing, and understanding the character you're going to have to use another medium.
その為、辞書は必要です。僕が日本語を独学していた頃分厚い印刷物の和英辞書を使っていたが、日本語学部に入学したら先輩方にＪＷＰＣＥ
というとても便利な電子辞典を勧めてもらいました。パソコンのソフトなので、最近流行っている携帯電子辞典のように持ち歩けないけど、このプログラムを使って自分の漢字表が簡単に作れます。
For that, we need a dictionary. When I studied Japanese on my own I used a really big, thick, unweildy Japanese-English dictionary, but after entering college my classmates recommended me a really useful electronic dictionary called JWPCE . It's a compuer program, so you can't carry it around with you like the pocket dictionaries that are really popular these days, but using this program we'll be able to make our own Kanji Lists.
僕は何かを書き写すことで憶えやすくなると思います。尚、漢字を勉強するのには読み書きを練習しなければなりません。でも漢字に関する受験参考書の殆どの場合、辞書で単語を引くこともいい勉強だと思われる所為か、漢字の用例の英訳はないし、更にその用例が過少であることからすれば、自分の漢字表を作成せざるを得ません。その作成についてはこれから書きたいと思います。
I find it easier to remember things by writing them down. Furthermore when studying Kanji you need to practice reading and writing. However in nearly every book written for Kanji learners, perhaps because it's often though that looking up characters in a dictionary is in itself a good way to study, there are no English translations of the words listed as examples, and often too few of these words provided. That's why you need to make your own lists. I'll write about making the lists below.

If you download JWPCE it comes with a manual, so read that and once you understand how to use it open up the dictionary, and enter a word listed in the book you're using. The Kanji and their reading, as well as an English definition pop up. Double-click one of the lines and...
・・・後ろのワープロに筆記します！このように漢字表に載っている用例を全て筆記したら、今度はその漢字をコピーして以下のように入力します。
...the word gets recorded in the word processor! Once you input all the example words listed, this time we're going to copy and paste the character itself and look it up.
そうするとＪＷＰＣＥのデータベースの中から、その漢字を含める全ての言葉が見えます。数千個が出てくる場合が少なくないので、音訓が身につけるように色々単語や熟語を記録します。漢検を対象に勉強し始めてからＪＷＰＣＥのデータベースの限界が少し見えてきたんですけど、自分の四字熟語辞典と携帯電子辞典に載っている広辞苑で補足すればまだまだ便利です。
Upon doing so, every word that contains that Kanji in JWPCE's database is displayed. Sometimes even thousands pop up, record a bunch of different ones in order to learn various readings. After starting to study for the Kanji Kentei I began to realize the limits of JWPCE's database, but by supplementing it with my own 4-Character Compound Dictionary and electronic dictionary's Koujien it's still really useful.
そのように参考書で表示される漢字を全部入力したら、キーボードの入力キーを何千回も打って上のように漢字を整理します。何ヶ月もやってきたので結構手馴れな動作ですが、やっぱり面倒です。先輩方が僕の単語表を作っている様子を見たら笑いました。確か先輩の一人がマイクロソフト・エクセルを使ったら自動的に出来上がるのだと言いましたが、僕はパソコンについて余り詳しくないのでやってみたことがないです。とにかく慣れたら素早く整えられるし、作成した単語表を全部保存してありますので、ご利用いただきたい方はどうぞコメントを下さい。
Once I enter all the charcters in the reference book, I hit Enter on the keyboard a few thousand times and it comes out like this. I've been doing this so many months Ive gotten used to it, but still it's a real pain. My friends laughed when they saw how much time I spent organizing the lists--one of them mentioned that you can do this kind of stuff automatically using Microsoft Excel, but I don't know much about computers so I never tried. Anyway I'm used to it so I can get it done quick, and since I have all the lists I made saved on my computer, anyone who wants to use them please leave a comment.

日本語が左側、英訳が右側になっているので紙を折って、日本語だけ、英語だけを見て勉強できます。僕は大抵各頁を３、４回書き写したところで暗記します。それでまた受験参考書を開いて練習問題をします。
Japanese is on the left and the English definition is on the right, so you can fold the paper over and study looking at only the Japanese, or vice versa. I can usually memorize it after writing out the Japanese 3 or 4 times. Then I go back to the book I use and do the Practice Exercises.
単語表を作る度に数時間掛かりますがとても有効な勉強仕方なので苦労と思っていません。先輩方にもこの仕方を勧めているし、彼等の上達振りを見てどれだけ能率的だか分かります。アメリカの大学における日本語教育が漢字学習にかなり不足していると思います。音訓を把握するよりも、言葉一つ一つ丸暗記する工夫でクラスが行われ、従って学生達の語彙力は致命的に限られています。
It takes several hours to make each list but they're so useful I don't think it too much trouble. I recommended this method to some of my classmates as well, and based on their rate of improvement you can see how effective it is. I think the Japanese Language Education carried out in American universities is quite lacking in terms of Kanji acquisition. More than grasping the readings of the characters, classes are structured to straight-up memorize words one by one, and so the students' range of vocabulary is horribly restricted.
今のところこの仕方では充分ではなくないですけど、単語の定義が英語に書かれている以上、類義語を使い分けることは僕にとってとても難しいです。ＪＷＰＣＥのように単語を記録してプリントする機能がある、日本人向きの電子辞典が在ったらいいですが、まだ見つけていません。
Right now this method is still enough, but since the definitions are displayed in English it's difficult to distinguish the individual usages of synonyms. It'd be nice to have a dictionary targeted for Japanese people capable of recording and printing vocabulary, but I haven't found one yet.
