Overview

This document provides essential information for NX‑OS Release 11.1(1r) for Nexus 9000 Series switches operating in ACI mode. It covers supported hardware and fabric extenders, installation guidance, compatibility and usage notes, and documented caveats including open issues and known behaviors. This release does not add new hardware features but continues to support system stability and operational guidance for ACI fabrics.

Unsupported or deprecated components should be removed before upgrading the switch software release.

Supported Fabric Extenders (FEX)

The following fabric extenders work with ACI mode switches:

Refer to Nexus 2000 Series fabric extender documentation for more details.

New and Changed Information

This release does not introduce new hardware support.
For new software features, see the associated APIC controller release notes for version 1.1(1r).

Installation Guidance

To install or replace a pluggable module (such as a GEM):

  1. Clear the switch’s current configuration.
  2. Power off the switch.
  3. Install or replace the hardware module.
  4. Power on the switch.

Refer to the ACI fabric hardware installation guide for full instructions.

Compatibility Notes

  • Only use optics and modules supported for the specific device models.
  • Unsupported third‑party optics may behave unpredictably.
  • Link‑level flow control is not supported on ACI‑mode switches.
  • Use supported direct connection or breakout options for fabric extenders.
  • A 10G interface on the leaf node is required to connect the controller cluster; direct connection to certain spine models is not allowed.

Usage Guidelines

  • Required control and management protocols must be permitted through fabric policies.
  • Leaf and spine nodes from different ACI fabrics must not be connected directly.
  • Standard allowed protocols include SNMP, BGP, OSPF, BOOTP/DHCP, IGMP, PIM, DNS, HTTPS, and NTP.
  • Ensure contract and multicast handling policies are configured correctly within the fabric.

Caveats

Open Caveats

The following open caveats describe issues that may affect operations:

  • Fabric extender logs may be missing in detailed outputs.
  • Some SVI interfaces do not transition down when all member ports are down.
  • Interface events and fault updates may not appear in GUI views.
  • Certain CLI command outputs display slowly.
  • CLI behavior may vary due to the underlying shell environment.
  • Some diagnostic results are incomplete.
  • Errors occur when the switch REST API reload command is used.
  • When both discovery protocols are enabled on an interface, neighbor learning may be disabled affecting forwarding.

Known Behaviors

Documented behaviors that might affect operations include:

  • Specific policy configurations, such as maximum prefix limits, are not supported.
  • Output span on fabric extender interfaces may not include all traffic types.
  • Multicast or tunnel counters may show zero even when traffic is present.
  • VLAN and MAC learning behaviors can be non‑flooding under specific conditions.
  • Temperature sensor readings on some platforms may be inaccurate due to hardware airflow characteristics.
  • Traffic drops and orphan port statistics anomalies may be observed.
  • Certain IPv6 and routing behaviors may require all fabric nodes to run the same software.
  • Changes to multicast behaviors may require careful policy design to avoid flooding beyond supported limits.
