The Grasshopper and the Ant
On a warm, summer day, a grasshopper was skipping along and chirping
when he saw ants putting food into piles.
"Why are you working so hard?"
asked the grasshopper "You should be merrier!(happy)
One ant answered, " We ants are thriftier(good at saving money) than you
grasshoppers. We are sabving some of the food for later. We are also
calculating how much food we will need. Then we are planning. Strategies
to keep the food safe and dry. That way, we will not go hungry when winter
comes and food is hard to find"
Through the summer, the grasshopper watched as the piles of food
magnified. The ants carried kernels of corn, pieces of wheat, and other
necessities to their nests. The grasshopper would sometimes hear a few
ants grumbling(complaing),but they never stopped working. While the ants
worked, the grasshopper spent the summer having fun.
When fall came, the grasshopper felt cold. Leaves dropped from the trees,
and crops died. By winter, he had nothing to eat.
As the lay in the grass, tired out by hunger, who should he see but the ants.
They were eating a huge piece of stale(old)bread! The grasshopper crawled over
and begged for a few crumbs(small pice of cake)
The ants replied,"All summer you watched us work, while you played.
Why should we feed you now?!
"if you gve me food now! Said the grasshopper, " I promise to help you
next summer," So, the ants gave the grasshopper some bread. From then on,
the grasshopper carried food for the ants in the summer. In this way, he was
qualified to share their food in the winter. The grasshopper learned the moral
of the story:
It is best to prepare ahead for hard times.
