The announcement was made by safety, security and liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe when he delivered the department's policy and budget speech in the provincial legislature on Thursday afternoon.

The department has been allocated a budget of R803 704 000 for the 2012-13 financial year with the safety management programme receiving the highest breakdown of more than R345-million.

Shongwe said the cameras would be installed in areas like Bushbuckridge, Hazyview, Pienaar, Kabokweni, Tonga, Vosman and Witbank.

Shongwe said the cameras would be linked to the war room at the Nelspruit command centre, where the footage would be analysed.

"The cameras will not only be used to prevent crime, but will also assist detectives in arresting criminals. Our long-term goal is to have all ports of entry in the province linked to the war room to monitor the movement of people and goods at the borders," Shongwe said.
