Even during the heyday of Imperialism of the 19 century, Afghanistan and Thailand maintained independence without being made colonies. Why? Because they functioned as buffer states between Great Powers.

Japan should declare neutrality and become a buffer state between China and the U.S. That's the only way Japan can achieve independence without heavily arming herself.

Japan should not remain to be a US satellite state nor become China's satellite state. Because if Japan remains to be a US satellite state or becomes China's satellite state, Japan will be a fierce battle ground in US-China military conflicts.

Japan should become just like Afghanistan and Thailand of the 19th century, which were buffer states between Great Powers.

Afghanistan was a buffer state between the British Empire (which ruled much of South Asia) and the Russian Empire (which ruled much of Central Asia) during the Anglo–Russian conflicts in Asia during the 19th century.

(After the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878, Afghanistan became a British Protected State, but regained independence after the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919.)

Thailand managed to retain independence as a buffer state between British Burma, British Malaya, and the French Indochina.

If Japan remains to be a satellite state of the United States, Japan will be a fierce battle ground in US-China military conflicts just like the Philippines in US-Imperial Japan military conflicts during the Second World War.

Actually, Japan is to China what the Philippines was to Imperial Japan. During the Second World War, the Philippines was the westernmost bastion of American military power in the Pacific. Currently, Japan is the westernmost bastion of American military power in the Pacific.

If Japan declares neutrality and becomes a buffer state between China and the U.S., the US military power in the Pacific will retreat to Hawaiian Islands, which will produce sufficient space between China and the U.S. to maintain peace.

Japan should declare neutrality and become a buffer state between China and the U.S. That's the only way Japan can achieve independence without heavily arming herself.

Thank you.
