I attended the meeting of "New Investment Opportunities - Technology & Climate Change" which was a part of Climate Week NYC. The meeting was held at a conference room of a law firm in a building facing the Times Square.
Five persons made presentations. Kevin Brooks, CEO & President, THiNKGREEN! Global Advisors, Inc., Andrew Darrell, Chief of Strategy (US Climate & Energy), Environmental Defense Fund, John Licata, Founder & Chief Energy Strategist, Blue Phoenix Inc., Michael Van Patten, Founder, President & Executive Chairman, Mission Markets Inc., and Brian Warshay, Energy Smart Technologies Analyst, Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
After the presentations, I talked with Mr. Kevin Brooks, Mr. Andrew Darrell and Mr. John Licata.
Let me report on my conversation with Mr. Andrew Darrell of Environmental Defense Fund.
During his presentation, Mr. Darrell mentioned that New Jersey schools could not use their rooftop solar panels for their own use when Hurricane Sandy hit 2012 because the solar panels were wired only to sell electricity to utilities.
I advised to him that exactly the same thing happened in Japan. When major earthquake and tsunami hit Japan 2011, many Japanese schools and households could not use their rooftop solar panels for their own use because the solar panels were wired only to sell electricity to utilities or they simply didn't know how to switch the mode of PV systems from selling electricity to feeding electricity to their own use.
After the earthquake and tsunami of 2011, a Japanese NPO promoting solar power that I had a contact worked hard to spread information as to the importance to make the rooftop solar panels to be wired for their own use. Also, the Japanese NPO spread information as to how to switch the mode of PV systems from selling electricity to feeding electricity to their own use.
If the experiences of Japan of 2011 had been shared with the United States, the New Jersey schools would have been able to use the electricity from the rooftop PV systems for their own use in 2012. It would have contributed to the better conditions of evacuees and possibly even saved some lives.
Therefore, I advised to him that Environmental Defense Fund and the Japanese NPO should cooperate and share information.
Mr. Darrell completely agreed with me. We agreed to keep in touch.
I am looking forward to having follow up meetings with Mr. Darrell and the other people during my staying in New York.

Darrellさんは、プレゼンテーションの中で、2012年、ハリケーンSandyが襲来した際、ニュージャージー州の学校は、屋上にある太陽電池の電気を自己消費出来なかったと伝えました。太陽電池が、電力会社へ売電するためだけのために配線されていたからです。
私は、Darrellさんに、日本でも、全く同じことが起こったと伝えました。2011年、東北大震災と津波が発生した際、多くの日本の学校や家屋は、屋根上にある太陽電池の電気を自己消費出来ませんでした。配線が売電向けのみであったり、売電モードから自己消費モードへの切換えの方法が分からなかったからです。
2011年の地震のあと、私がコンタクトのある、太陽光発電を推進する日本のNPOは、屋根上太陽電池の電気を自己消費出来るように配線することの重要性を広め、また、太陽電池を売電モードから自己消費モードへ切り換える方法について紹介しました。
もし、2011年の日本における経験が、アメリカと共有出来ていれば、ニュージャージー州の学校は、太陽電池の電気を自己消費出来ていたでしょう。そうすることで、避難者の居住環境が改善され、人命が救われていたかも知れません。
そのため、私は、Darrellさんに、Environmental Defense Fundと日本のNPOが協力し、情報共有すべきであると伝えました。
Darrellさんは、完全に同意し、今後、連絡を取り合うことに合意しました。
今後、ニューヨーク滞在中、Darrellさん、および、他のみなさんとフォローアップ・ミーティングを持つことが楽しみです。
