Allow me to introduce to you one of the greatest players in the history of football. His name is Johan Cruyff. He was the exponent of so-called Total Football, leading his team of Ajax and the Dutch national team as a captain in 1970’s.
Cruyff has changed football completely. Some people divide the history of football into BC and AC, i.e., Before Cruyff and After Cruyff. When you see the videos of 1970 World Cup and 1974 World Cup, you will notice a striking difference. In BC football, a pass was made from one player to another player. But, in AC football, a pass is made from one player to a space.
In Total Football, players change positions systematically in order to make and use a space. So, a defensive player (e.g. a right-back player) participates in offense. And, an offensive player plays defense in forechecking and pressing. Also, an offside-trap was used most effectively in Total Football. Total Football is sometimes called Spectacle Football because it is.
Total Football was theoretically perceived by Rinus Michels, manager of Ajax and the Dutch national football team. But, it was Cruyff who implemented it with his cleverness and skills. Cruyff was a very intelligent all-round player. He was good in passing, dribbling, shooting, and commanding. He could play every position on the pitch.
