TOEFL TWE No.75

75. Some universities require students to take classes in many subjects. Other universities require students to specialize in one subject. Which is better? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

While some universities think that students should take just one subject, I agree to other universities’ idea to get students to take classes in many subjects.

One advantage of requiring students to take classes in many subjects is that students have various points of view. For example, when I was an undergraduate student, my major is physics. However, an intimate friend was so interested in sociology that he took me some classes about sociology. At first, I was not so interested in these classes. As I studied sociology, however, I began to consider sociology interesting. Finally, when I took the final test about sociology classes, I could know the basis of sociology. Moreover, I enjoyed newspapers, which had been difficult to understand before. Thus, in addition to the point of physics, I got another point of view about sociology.

On the other hand, one advantage of making students specialize in one subject is that students could become a specialist quickly. For example, for people who have not studied mathematics, numerical expressions are recognized as just rows of characters. If a student spends his time just to study mathematics, however, soon, he would have special ability to have a good command of numerical expressions. At the same time, others cannot imitate easily what he does about mathematics. This is how he can become a professional mathematician without so much time.

Comparing both, I agree that universities should require students to study many subjects. Now, the world has been more and more complex. So, young people need to provide a broad-ranging analysis of what happens in the world. For example, why did Osama bin Ladin bomb World Trade Center? For example, the bombing might be caused by the differences among religions, economic envy toward Western countries, and simple dislike for America. We cannot identify the reasons clearly without much knowledge and diversified standpoints.

In conclusion, as we mentioned above, I agree that universities should give students classes in many fields. When my children grow up, I want them to enter the universities in which they can study various things.
