The concern of Byron's The Vision of Judgment is to some extent literary and incompletely political, but its spring was Byron's execration of Cant and false piety.
On the decease of King George III, old, mad, and blind, in 1820, the Poet Laureate Robert Southey produced a praiseful literary work. Written in unrhymed hexameter, its attempts at decency achieved no more than a unoriginal ostentation. But far worsened was its dissembling and obsequious speech. Entitled "The Vision of Judgment" it showed George III's success passageway into the entrepreneur of paradise and the denouncement of his enemies. To Byron, the manifest flattery of a King, who was at unexcelled second-rate and at most wicked tyrannical, was decidedly unsavory.
Byron was specially angry because he saw Southey as a recreant - one who had at one time espoused the tolerant cause, but had after denaturized his colors to encouragement the announcement Tory jamboree. Further Southey had in public attacked Byron's free verse as happiness to the "Satanic School" whose upshot was to challenge spirituality and to dissolute need. Southey was liable too, as Byron believed, for broad in no doubt scandalous rumours nearly Byron's vivacity in Switzerland. (Byron indeed had impassioned personal matters with about cardinal to lxx women). Byron here took paying back by assailing both Southey and his "Vision" with overgenerous scoffing.
