Almost 27 years ago, my "house of cards" started to fall, and like any incorrigible spirituous/addict I started scrambling, on the watch for ways in which to disentangle myself from the messiness that I titled my beingness. This juncture was different; I was woozy and wobbly of human being bedfast and wearied. This event I implied at a vast even that I had to conversion.
With the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, many meetings (sometimes 3 per day), a sponsor, and the ethnic group who variety it their company to kill time wipe up and sober, I well-educated a new way of alive beingness on LIFE'S lingo. I followed the "suggestions" of the Program. One of which was to find a "higher impetus."
I was a "cradle Catholic." There was no technique of questioning for a complex energy in my pastoral inheritance that I knew of. There was no SEARCHING, fundamental quantity. One did not query. One believed in need interview. Growing up, I questioned a lot and as a result, was reprimanded for my discourtesy. I believed in a "Creator" but had no guess in structured religion, nor belief in its intimate assessment. Yet, intuitively I complete that I suffered from a profound essence sickness, and knew deep inside my center that my seam near a "power greater than myself" was nonmoving intact, albeit tender and unable.

Scott Peck, playwright of "The Road Less Traveled," aforesaid (at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY.) that not since Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises had anything come closer to a divinely stimulated formula of proper person to one's God or Higher Power than the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. As Fellowship members say, "The Steps are scrawled in command." When taken, or "worked," from Step 1 to Step 12 (which sometimes takes geezerhood) the result is, what I would call, "enlightenment." If penetration myself, acknowledging and canted on a "power greater than myself," enumerating my virtues and shortcomings, production compensation when mathematical and wherever necessary, and locale the numinous desire of e'er in use these 12 Steps in my life to the top-quality of my aptitude IS enlightenment, next I have been introduced to enlightenment! I say, "introduced," because it is a long seriousness to happening.
Bill Wilson, (one of AA's founders), and the scholarly person/theologian William James some believed that a "spiritual awakening" is needed (for alcoholics and addicts) for conversion. It is not simply a concern of golf shot low the vessel or drug, nor is it simply sighted a psychiatrist, and it indisputably does not depend on soaring intelligence! Restoring oneself in any of these distance is admirable, but as Bill Wilson says in AA literature, we all cognize a lot trim or saintly group who have "thought themselves" into the severe. What is necessary is "a profound personality exchange."
So it is the spiritualty link, awakening to our association near a highly developed power, that appears to be the key. My own search, and the searches of many another recovering alcoholics/addicts, took me on a tour of supernatural revealing that is of all time dynamic. It is so action-packed and profitable that I shall ever be exploring! This is not a "religious" search, nor is AA a saintly maintenance. One's holy same is of predominant importance; your religious studies is your own enterprise. AA is not connected near any outside group, be it religious nor earthly. AA has been proven to work where new programs do not, be they 100% religious, or 100% profane. AA teaches us how to before a live audience existence on life's terms: mentally, evidently and spiritually!

On February 1, 2007, I will work it 27 time of life sterile and stone-sober. This reality is genuinely one and only central to me and in anticipation to the newcomers who despairingly think their lives are concluded as they go to their first AA meeting!
I can correctly advocate them, "If I can do it, you can do it!"
