David Bowie自身は、本曲が「感受性豊かな女の子がメディアに反応している歌」だとしたうえで、次のように語っている。
僕が思うに、彼女は現実に失望しているんです。現実の憂鬱さの中で彼女は生きているんですが、彼女はどこかに素晴らしい人生があると聞かされているんです。でもそれを見つけることができないから、彼女はひどく失望しているんです。
なお、本曲の主人公である「the girl with the mousy hair」のモデルになった人物が後に判明している。
彼女は、Hermione Farthingaleという名の女優・ダンサーで、Bowieの元恋人でもあった（彼女との関係はDavid Bowieの"Letter to Hermione"（曲）の題材にもなった）。1960年代に彼らはFeathersというバンド（曲）も結成している。
