Strikes are like the jackpots of bowling, especially if you’re good enough
(or lucky enough) to knock down all ten pins in every frame and achieve
the sport’s Holy Grail — a perfect 300 game. Of course, when you’re bowling
for fun, and especially as a beginner, you’re happy just to be knocking down
any pins, much less bowling strikes!
Strikes are a great reason to high-five your bowling buddies, but they’re
also the best way to give your score a huge boost. Strikes are worth a full 10
points plus the points for your next two throws (see Chapter 2 for the full
scoop on scoring). Just one strike can quickly improve your score.
In this chapter, we explain how to throw the perfect strike ball, taking into
account whether you tend to hook the ball or throw it straight. We also share
tips on how to tweak your approach if strikes just aren’t happening for you.
The Key to Strikes: Hitting the Pocket
Many beginners feel that the best way to get a strike is to throw the ball as
hard as they can right down the middle of the lane, aiming straight for the
headpin. Unfortunately, hitting the headpin head on is more likely to split the
pins down the middle — leaving you with a difficult spare to make — thanThe best way to consistently throw strikes is to throw the ball into the pocket —
the area between the 1 pin and the 2 pin if you’re a lefty or between the 1 pin
and the 3 pin if you’re a righty. Check out Figure 10-1 to see exactly which
pocket you should be aiming for.
Getting strikes in bowling is all about physics and chain reactions. Sure, that
sounds intimidating, but all you need to know is that hitting the pins with the
ball creates a chain reaction where one pin falls, then the next one falls, and
so on. The angle that the ball hits the pins determines the direction in which
the pins fall.
If you were to slow down a strike for a right-handed hook bowler and take a
closer look, the chain reaction of the pins might go something like this: The
ball first hits the 1-3 pocket. The 1 and 3 pins fall, creating a chain reaction
with the headpin knocking down the 2, 4, and 7 pins and the 3 pin toppling
into the 6 pin, which takes out the 10 pin. Of course, the bowling ball does
part of the work too. It hits the 1 and 3 pins and continues to roll into the 5
pin before hitting the 8 pin and then taking out the 9 pin. By the time the ball
reaches the back of the pin deck, all the pins have fallen, resulting in a strike
