Increasing your pin action
Sometimes good pin action can overcome a shot that’s a little off the mark.
Pin action describes how the pins react to being hit by the ball, whether
that’s flying to the back, shooting off to the side, or spinning around and
knocking the other pins down.
Some shots result in more pin action than others because they hit at different
speeds and angles. You can increase your pin action by
✓ Throwing the ball faster: Just be careful not to throw the ball too fast.
That can actually decrease your pin action. Chapter 7 tells you how to
increase your speed without overdoing it.
✓ Putting more spin on the ball: Pins are like dominoes — they fall down
because one pin falls into another one. The more spin, or rotation, your
ball has, the more power your ball has when it hits the pins. (Chapter 7
also tells you how to put more spin on your ball.)
Being consistent
Consistency is the name of the game in throwing strikes. If you throw the perfect
strike ball time and time again and hit your pocket, you’re going to see strikes. Of
course, the only way to achieve this is with practice, practice, practice.
Our advice? Head to the bowling center, get a lane, and bowl. Forget about
the score. Just focus on sending the ball into the pocket and hitting your
mark at the same speed each time. The more you try, the better you’ll get.
Each lane is different due to oil patterns, the number of bowlers who’ve used
the lane that day, the weather, and so on. The throw that works on one lane
may need to be adapted for another lane. We explain how to adapt to different
lane conditions in Chapter 13.
I Was Robbed! What to Do When
You Can’t Buy a Strike
Just about every bowler experiences it at one time or another — the excited rush
after throwing what feels like a perfect strike ball followed by the crash back to
earth when it falls short. Before you heave your bowling ball out the front door
of the center, take a deep breath and remind yourself that bowling is a game of
angles. If you didn’t score a strike, there’s a reason. It may be something you’re
doing, or it may have something to do with lane conditions, the weather, or your
ball (and no, the problem isn’t that your ball has a mind of its own).
