It's a great pleasure to welcome Neil Caldicott, creative director of BBC Global News, Thanks for coming here today and talking
to English Journal.

You became creative director for BBC Global News in February 2008, with specific responsibility for the visual brand across BBC World and
BBC World Service. Er, could you tell us what a visual brand for international news is?
Neil Cadicott:
This is where I should show you. I should be able to show you a big logo of what it is.My role has been created because the BBC has realised that
internationally there is great strength and value in having a consistent brand across every medium that people might consume it in.
there is xxxx in having~:~を持つことにxxxxがある。
So, that might be television, it might be radio, it might be online, it might be on you mobile. And it makes no sense if somebody goes online logo and then use bbc news and
they switch on the television and they see BBC World News and they see a different logo.Every time the visual brand is dirrerent then you lose the weight, you lose
the power.It's all about consistency and that's why we have now created a team of people whose remit is to work across all of the different platforms that the BBC produces
news internationally, to make sure that we have consistency of brand.
weight=重要性

Neil Cadicott:
Absolutely.It's about consistency.It's about breathing life into that as well and actually making the brand stand for independence, stand for impartiality,
stand for integrity and trust, all of the things that we belive BBC World News does well in the international marketplace.
impartiality=公正、中立
integrity=正直、誠実

As well as managing the on-air look of BBC World News, you're responsible for how international news is branded at BBC.It's very interesting to hear the BBC talked of as
a brand and to hear about it competing in the marketplace internationally.

Neil Cadicott:
A strong brand means you have the ablity to let your viewers know exactly what it is they will receive when they switch on your channel, or when they look at you online, or when
they use their mobile phones to get their news.And so it's acttually very useful for viewers. A strong brand actually helps them make a more informed choice.
informed=情報に基づく、情報に裏付けされた。
what it is they wil receive :このような使いかたをグ^グルと結構多い。what it is (that) ~=that以下はなんであるのか、
でit isは強調構文でthatは省略。
I don’t know what it is that I like about you.
ex)What is it that makes us humans?
強調しない場合の文では、What makes us humans? What is it that makes us humans?
It's also very useful internally in the BBC, because a storng brand with real life and real vigour actually allows programme makers to ask themselves "Is this the sort of programme that should
be on the BBC World News?" It helps a journalist, when they are thinking about a particular angle to a story, to say,"Would an internationalist be interested in the way that I am currently doing this story?"
And so a brand is useful both for the people who make the programmes and also for the viewers who watch the programmes.And more than that, it's vital because we, our cometitors all have very
strong brands.If we do not put effort into that , if I do not look after the brand and make it consistent across all of our platforms, well then I'm not doing a very good job and I'm doing a disservice to the BBC.
the sort=kind of
the sort of programmes that should be on the bbc wordl news=~にふさわしい番組だろうか?
the way that i am curreny doing this story:the wayの使い方。
vital=〔存在に〕必須の、不可欠な

I'm old enough to remember the BBC having a virtual er, respected monopoly on broadcasting. And it used to be symbolise a broad range of programmes, at home,from the news and
current affirs, documentaries, and sport,light entertainment as it was called;there were half-hour comedy shows -that sort of things.
But,um BBC Worlds News seem to me such contrast to all this. Is BBC world News taking its place in this long tradition of broadcasting or it is apart from all this, do you think?
It is a new phase for broadcasting by the BBC?
old enough to =私の年齢ですと、
monopoly=独占権
symbolise=象徴する、代名詞であった。
phase=(変化するものの)段階、局面

I think it's very much part of what the BBC is all about both domestically and internatinally.We're a quality product.We try to deliver the best journalism in the same way that those
programmes( you're thinking of )tried to deliver the best humour, the best comedy, the best documentraries.So we're always striving to be the best.

BBC World News as a channel is on a journey.When we launched we were very much news plus information and that would typically take the format of 30 minutets of news and then
you would have, for the rest of the hour, a programme.That may be, er, Top Gear, it may have been er, Mastermind.
Actually, when we launched we had a fair level of, um, lighter programming.What we 've found (as the channel has grown and been more successful )is that our viewers actually really like the news (that we do), and actually they would rather have a channel that was more dedicated to news and current affairs programmes and find their entertainment elsewhere.
Very luckily for us, we're also in the process of lanuching other international channels unde the BBC name.

Neil Cadicott:
It is a very interesting question particularly when you think about the American domestic news market, which has had some criticisim levelled at it about becoming more about entertainment
than about news.We have a very clear idea about our viewers and what our audience like about BBC World News.

Your career at the BBC began in 1997 as a continuity announcer working across all the BBC'S channels-------the BBC at home in the UK, which must remain one of the few countries left to
employ continuity announcers rather than switching to commercials in between programmes-----what was that like?

Neil Cadicott:
Joining the BBC as a continuity announcer was a fantastic opportunity. Um, it did mean that I got to watch an awful lot of television becauce typically, er, the continuity announcer only speaks
right at the very beginning and right at very end of any programme.So for someone who loves telly, like I do,I got to watch an awful lot of BBC television.And that was good.It was also a great
privillege to be able to broadcast to often 10,12 million people who would hear your voice.Um, very quickly I realized that nobody actually recoginised my voice and I could quite comfortably walk down
the street without anybody mobbing me, giving me presents or shaking me by the hand.

So, once I got over that disappointment, I had a very very interesting time and very enjoyable time working on the BBC channels. The highlight, I think for me was, being the first voice on BBC Knowledge, which was a new digital channel, which has now turned into BBC Four, So I was actually the first person to announce on that channel and the first words were heard spoken by me,
which was nice.

No news is good news we say in English and therefore, unfortunately, most news is bad news.How do you feel about that? That( in the end )one of the most important, if not the most important,

Neil Cadicott:
That is a very big question. I think undoubtedly news helps.To be more informed about what's goin on in the world, to understsand your impact on the rest of the world and to understand other people's impact upon you, has to be a good thing;it breeds tolerance. And access to impartial information means that people can make more informed choices.
has to be a good thig=良いことでないはずがありません。
It's very interesting point you make that, et news tends to concentrate on bad things and I think that's right. I can't argue with you on that; we have a lot of bad news on the channel. Our aim though is not to tell news in a depressing way but merely to take the issues that are important to our audience and to dig into those issues a little bit deeper, and to bring out more information about those isues.
And so, in many ways, our approach to news is not:that is a bad event, and we are going to talk about it.It is: that is an event which is important to our viewers; we need to find out more about it because that's what our viewers want to find out about.

Neil Cadicott:
I think it's the thing that sets BBC World News apart from other international news channels---- is, as I say,digging that little bit deeper and not just reporting on what happens.Because, actually,
many people can just tell you what has happend, but there is real skil and expertise in unpacking a news event and saying,"Well this is what happened, but actually these are the reasons why we have got to this situation."And then you take another step forward and you say, "And this is how it's going to affect you."And that is a very powerful message.
