Welcome to a Laptop AC Adapter specialist of the Msi Ac Adapter
The MSI Radeon HD R7870 Hawk showed up in a nice looking box with a stealth bomber pictured on the front. This is a play toward the "Military Grade" components MSI uses when building video cards and motherboards. With the new Battleship movie coming out, I wonder if we might see some naval comparatives on future packaging.
The back of the box lays out all of the features and specifications of the MSI R7870 Hawk. It details the minimum system requirements you'll need to run the card. There is no surprise here, you'll need a PCIe X16 slot available, 1GB of system memory, and they make sure to let you know that you can't watch DVDs or Blu-Rays with the appropriate optical drive. MSI recommends at least a 550W power supply with adapter like Averatec 1020 90W Ac Adapter , Averatec 5200 90W Ac Adapter , LG P300 90W Ac Adapter , LG M1 Ac Adapter , LG LW60 Ac Adapter , LG R200 Ac Adapter , LG W1 Ac Adapter , MSI M510 Ac Adapter , MSI PR620 Ac Adapter , MSI VR610 Ac Adapter , MSI X480 Ac Adapter , MSI S250 Ac Adapter , which is probably a good idea. MSI also reminds you that the PSU should have two 6-pin connectors, but they include MOLEX adapters just in case.
I'm a big fan of the boxes that open up into a windowed view. I know it doesn't add anything to the card, but the extra fluff is nice. The box for the MSI R7870 Hawk opens up to show the card nestled snuggly in place. More of the features of the R7870 Hawk are explained here and graphically represented.
When you open up the box and pull out all of the accessories, you'll notice that MSI included all of the ordinary stuff and a few less-than-usual items. First up we have two MOLEX to 6-pin PCIe power cable adapters. Most power supplies over 550W will have the 6-pin connectors nowadays, but even if it doesn't, you're covered here. There is, of course, the standard VGA to DVI adapter as well for those who haven't graduated to digital yet. The MSI R7870 Hawk has two mini-display ports but no full size display port, so an adapter from DP to Mini-DP is included as well. The standard documentation, quick installation guide, and driver CD are included, as is a certificate stating that the video card has been built with top-quality components that have been thoroughly tested. The final accessory included with the MSI R7870 Hawk is a set of three voltage measurement cables that attach directly to the card. The leads can be used to take voltage measurements directly from the GPU, Memory, and VDDCI themselves using a multi-meter. This method will give you the most accurate results when measuring voltage.
Looking at the MSI R7870 Hawk straight on, we can see the dual-fan assembly. The R7870 Hawk uses the Twin Frozr assembly. The Twin Frozr series of GPU cooling assemblies has a long history at MSI. The previous generation's R6870 Hawk used the Twin Frozr III assembly. Basically, the Twin Frozr sports two 80mm fans built off the Propeller Blade Technology. MSI has also included their Dust Removal Technology with the R7870 Hawk. The Dust Removal Technology runs the fans in reverse for 30 seconds after you start up your computer to remove dust from the heatsink underneath. According to MSI, this technology can lower GPU temperatures by up to 15 degrees Celsius. They also say the Twin Frozr runs quieter than reference coolers.
