ジョン・デンバー（John Denver、1943年12月31日 – 1997年10月12日）は、アメリカ合衆国のシンガーソングライター。本名はヘンリー・ジョン・デュッチェンドルフ・ジュニア（Henry John Deutschendorf Jr.）。

経歴

ニューメキシコ州ロズウェル出身。ドイツ系の家庭に生まれる。
Take me home, country roads（カントリー・ロード）、Leaving on a jet plane、Sunshine on my shoulders、Rocky mountain highなど数多くのヒット曲を生み出し、1970年代のフォークソングにおいて中心的な役割を果たした。
親しみやすい曲調と、繊細で情感あふれる歌詞が特徴である。最大のヒット作Take me home, country roadsはオリビア・ニュートン＝ジョンにカバーされたほか、日本ではスタジオジブリの映画『耳をすませば』の主題歌（映画ではオリビア・ニュートン＝ジョンのカバー曲を使用）として使われたものが有名である。

しかし、デンバー本人は実は一度も歌の舞台であるウェストヴァージニア州に行った事がなかったという。そのためか歌詞に出てくる地名はヴァージニア州の物が多い見当違いな物である。

コロラド州アスペンのリオグランデ州立公園には、デンバーの作品「ロッキー・マウンテン・ハイ」を讃える記念碑がある。ロッキー・マウンテン・ハイは、現在アメリカ・コロラド州の公式な州歌に採用されている。

1997年10月12日、米国内ツアーを終えて、カリフォルニアで休日を過ごしていたが、自ら操縦していた飛行機が燃料切れで墜落して死亡。自宅には投機目的の石油の備蓄タンクが設置されていた。
残された遺産はおよそ2000万ドル超（日本円で26億）。1998年、妻と元妻とで遺産の分配を巡って法廷に持ち込まれる。

作品解説

太陽を背に受けて
「太陽を背に受けて」は、Dick Kniss と Mike Taylor との共同制作になる作品である。1973年、シングル盤としてリリースされ、1974年初期には全米ナンバーワンのヒットを記録した。
デンバーは、Seventeen Magazine にこの曲を創作した経緯を寄稿している。「気分が滅入っていて、ブルーな曲を書きたいと思っていたとき、この曲想が思い付いた。この曲は、自分のライフスタイルを表現したものである。」と。
当初、「さすらいのカウボーイ」というシングル盤のB面に収録されて発売された。ベトナム戦争が終結したころ、この曲には重要な示唆が含まれていると一般に受け取られるようになり、アダルト・コンテンポラリーを扱う放送局で流され始めた。そのうちに、1974年1月26日には全米ヒットチャートの90位に入り、その後９週間に渡ってヒットチャートのナンバー1を記録した。

緑の風のアニー
緑の風のアニー（英名 Annie's Song）は、デンバー自身が作曲と作詞を行った。この曲は、アルバム「バック・ホーム・アゲイン」（英名 Back Home Again）に収録され、1974年に RCAレコードから発売された。Milt Okunがプロデューサーを担当し、演奏時間は2分58秒である。1974年7月、2週間に渡って全米ナンバー1ヒットを記録したこの曲は、デンバーにとって2回目の全米ナンバーとなった曲でもある。イギリスにおいても、ナンバー1ヒットを記録した。
緑の風のアニーは、当時ジョン・デンバーの妻であった Annie Denver (旧姓 Annie Martel) に捧げた叙情詩（じょじょうし）である。 Annie は、アメリカのミネソタ州スリーピーアイ出身である。ミネソタ州の New Ulm 近郊の州立公園を二人で散歩していたとき、デンバーは周囲の景色の素晴らしさに感嘆しつつ、同時に妻のことに想いをはせながら、数分の内にこの曲を書き上げたとされる。この曲が流行するようになって以降、多くの人々の間で結婚式の際頻繁に演奏されるようなったり、相手に愛情を表現するための代わりに利用されるようになった。その理由は、この曲が聞き手の想像力に素晴らしく訴えるだけでなく、歌詞が誰にとっても普遍的な意味を含んでいるからである。ただし歌詞の中には、Annie という名前は一言も出て来ない。
