ラグビードラマ 「スクールウォーズ２」 の主題歌は、この曲の日本語カバーです。
丸山みゆきの日本語版もかなりいいですが、やはり肉の塊 meatloaf と呼ばれたアメフト経験者の原曲は素晴らしい。
そもそも曲名からして、熱い教師が生徒を叱咤激励 (しったげきれい) するドラマにぴったりです。
「out of the frying pan」 は直訳すれば「フライパンの外へ」ということですが、フライパンの外へ出てもそこは燃えさかる炎があるわけで、日本のことわざで言えば「一難去ってまた一難」というような意味でしょう。
しかしこの曲で歌い手のミート・ローフは 「I wanna take you (お前を連れ出したい)」 と歌っていて、相手をフライパンから出してやりたい、そしてその後の 「into the fire」 に続くので、火の中に飛び込ませてやりたいと歌っています。
現在は苦しく厳しいだろうが、苦労を恐れず火の中に飛び込んで戦い抜いて欲しい、戦いを恐れて逃げ出さないで欲しいという、熱すぎる指導者の愛を表現しているかの様な歌であります。
茨の道を行けとか、苦労は買ってでもしろ、といった感じでしょうか。
