ドイツのバンドであるガンマ・レイ。
設立者のカイ・ハンセンの歌声については触れないが、やっぱり三枚目のこのアルバムまでボーカルだったラルフ・シーパースは素晴らしいよ。
このアルバム一曲目はラルフの伸びのある声がすばらしい名曲です。
歌詞の内容は架空のお話で、序盤にタイムマシンという言葉が出てきます。
ある男は過去に行く方法を発見してタイムマシンで飛び立つ。
歴史に残らなかったり、権力者が都合よく変えた我々の歴史ではなく、その男が旅先で見る過去こそが真の現実であり、人類を救う鍵になると信じて行動します。
しかし、歌詞の中盤では曲調が変わり、男の試みが失敗したことがわかります。
だから男は元の現在には戻れなくなります。
ですから歌詞の最後の部分の「And I will return to (私は～へ帰る) the time and place I belong to (私がいるべき時と場所)」は、現代のことではなく、男が追い求めてきた時空の狭間だと解釈しました。
ちなみに、この曲の歌詞は主役の男以外に、友人と思われる別の人物も出てきます。
その別の人間が主人公について 「He found」 とか 「Fly my friend」 とか言っています。
「I ～」 と歌ってるところはもちろん主人公の言葉なわけですが、序盤ではその二人が混ざり合っています。
非常にわかりづらいので、主人公のセリフは 「そう、俺は」などと訳してみました。
