“Marine fish eggs and larvae from the east coast of South Africa”というWebsiteに素晴らしい研究成果を載せて下さっていた南アフリカ共和国の Allan Connell 博士（South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversityの名誉研究員）が2016年3月18日、KwaZulu-Natal南岸沖で潜水中に亡くなったという記事を見つけた（享年73歳）。
ハタンポ科の魚卵を調べるため、上記の彼のWebsiteを探したが繋がらなかったので、さらに調べたところ、次のふたつのニュース記事が見つかった。

彼のWebsiteについては、このブログで彼の亡くなる約半年前の2015年８月に紹介したことがあり、DNAで同定した南アフリカ東岸の卵・仔魚の写真と形態情報は目を見張るものであり、日本近海に出現する卵・仔魚の同定に極めて有用なものである。彼のWebsiteは閉鎖されたままなのが残念でならない。

Even though he did his PhD in Entomology, he had always been interested in fishing from a very young age.
“After my retirement I started a culture of collecting and studying fish eggs. I collect, catalogue and identify these fish eggs. While doing this work, I came across eggs which I couldn’t identify and that’s around the time I went into DNA testing," he says.
At the time there wasn’t much being done in this field in South Africa.
彼は昆虫学で博士号を取得し、リタイヤ後に魚卵の研究を始めたとのこと。
