Dick: By the way, Yuko, what's that?

と、祐子さんはディックさんに自分の手元にあるものが何であるか
尋ねられました。　すると、

Yuko: This? (/ Which? / Doredesuka??)

と祐子さんは即座に手元にあるものの１つを持ち上げて尋ねます。

ところで、これは非常に重要なことですが、英単語 'this' をマスターするということは、
「this ⇒ これ、この」や「これ、この ⇒ this」が瞬時にしてできるようになることでは
ありません。

本番の英会話の状況で、必要に応じて即座に、その場から手で触れることができそう
なものを指し示したり、手で持って示したりして、相手の注意をそのものに引くために
'this' と言えるようになることです。

'Which' にしても同様です。
「『どれ』に当たる英単語は何ですか？」と尋ねると、即座に「which」と答えられるの
に、本番の英会話の状況では、必要に応じて即座に 'Which?' と言えない人がどれほ
ど多いことでしょう。

英語の語句をマスターするということは、その和英や英和の置き換えが瞬時にできる
ようになることでは決してありません。

Dick: No, the red one near your left hand.
(/ The red one near your left hand.)

Yuko: This? (/ Koredesuka??)

ーーーーーーーーーー

Dick: Yes. Wha is it?

Yuko: (This is an) Enpitukezuri.

Dick: Empitukezuri?

Yuko: Yes. (Very good. Korewa) Konnafuni tukaimasu. 〈With a gesture.〉

Dick: Oh, a pencil sharpener.

Yuko: Pencil sharpener?

Dick: Yes, (it's) a pencil sharpener.

Yuko: (A pencil sharpener.) Thank you.

Then Yuko takes up one of them immediately, and asks back showing it whether or

not it is the one Dick is pointing to, as follows.

By the way, to master the English word 'this' is not to become able to convert instantly

'this' into the lexical Japnese equivalent 'kore' or 'kono' and vice versa.

Basically, it is to become able to say 'this', holding or touching the thing or pointing to

the thing the student can almost touch, to which the student wants to call the attention

of the partner in a real English conversation situation.

The same hold good with the word 'which'.

Most students can give the word 'which' immediately when asked what is the English

equivalent of the Japanese 'dore', but very few students can say, "Which?" instantly

when necessary in a real English conversation situation.

To master English words should not be to become able to do immediate conversions

of lexical equivalents between English and Japanese.
