Where are the cars ? I miss old films where the cars where in the centre not the actions, because i can find a lot of action films but i cannot racing films.

A year or so ago, the intro to this video got me to shut it off and go play this game. I completely forgot to finish the video. I'm not really a completionist, so I'm only sitting around 90% of puzzles finished. A year later, I'm watching as someone who loves this game to death, yes but-ing or mentally defending parts of the game that you had a problem with that I didn't mind, or even liked. And then I saw the part with the 50 minute video puzzle. What. The. Fuck. Thanks for getting me to play this awesome game. I still love it even if you're right about some of the crap you have to slog through (and the yikes story. Great well-thought-out video. I'm glad I played first before watching though.

As the company grows with projects beyond The Witness, we thought it'd be nice to show progress on something not too secretive. For those folks into technical posts, I'll discuss how we used our new programming language to create an automated framework to test the language itself.

Well the entire point is: if you don't pride yourself in your intellectual accomplishment, you won't enjoy the game. But I mean, it is a puzzle game after all, that's the whole point of puzzle games.

This is probably obvious, but criticizing a game that is entirely about figuring out its rules on your own for being too difficult or badly designed or a poor communicator is a very complicated thing. As I watched this, I couldn't help but find your criticisms unfair because it seemed to me that, as obnoxious as it may seem to come out and say it, you're blaming the game for failings in your own approach to it—yes, for being bad at it. Specifically, you pointed out early on that the game shows with the relatively complex bunker door puzzle that you should explore somewhere else if you don't understand something, but then you repeatedly told stories about how you bashed your head against this or that puzzle instead of taking that message to heart. The clearest example is the audio puzzles. It's crazy to me that you brute-forced your way through that stuff! If you don't understand something in The Witness—not if you find a specific puzzle too hard, but rather if you can't figure out what you're meant to be doing in the first place—then the thing to do is to try to look at it from a different angle. Walk away if you must and let your subconscious mind pick at it. If you had to give up, it would have been better to seek hints from the community or just a straight explanation so that you could at least understand the basic idea and take some enjoyment from solving the puzzles instead of trying every possible solution! I personally found all of the different rules throughout the game to be perfectly accessible, and I'd argue that a lot of them use simple, clever design to prime the player to figure them out. For example, when you interact with a panel, the game pulls you into place so that it's centered in your view and at a uniform distance, and as a result it controls your perspective completely. This ensures that the apple tree is framed on your screen right next to the first puzzle panel in that area and that the rock formations and trees are perfectly lined up behind the clear glass panels. It's not as if the player has to stumble across the right angle or anything for these early puzzles; all they have to do is to see what is being placed right in front of them. The whole game is about perspective, as you said, and there are lots of different types of puzzles that can get this fundamental notion across to the player; once any of these rules is understood, the importance of looking at things in different ways should become more generally. Also, if you pay attention to environmental themes in the area, you might even find yourself further prepared because they synergize well with the panel rules employed within them. For the tree shadow puzzle, the unbroken shadow is an abstraction of the path you need to draw; you got stuck on your expectation of a perfect overlay and didn't make the logical leap. And could someone miss the glare on the desert panels? Sure, but then they aren't looking carefully enough at things from different perspectives—they're playing The Witness poorly. Maybe they'll go someplace else, figure something else out, come back, and look at them more carefully due to being better attuned to the game's wavelength. The way to think about the audio puzzles is to wonder about the open layout of the panel and notice the correlation between the number of parallel paths and the number of pitches present in the sound. You mentioned several properties of sound as possibilities for what the puzzle is about; it's a shame that this didn't click for you as you considered them. But once you do realize this, you also figure out that the dots along panel paths are an alternate way to express pitch. Following that, yes, the puzzle in the ship is one of the hardest in the game, but it's not a joke at all. The presence of differently sized dots along the path clues you in to the fact that it's an audio puzzle because it's the only context in which you've seen that symbol set, and the fact that there are two colored sets and a mirrored line tells you that there are two sets of sound. The real difficulty of the puzzle is in considering the very slow sound of the ship's groans as a candidate for half of the solution. It's devilish—but also fair play and quite satisfying to solve. Difficulty in puzzle design is very subjective. Attesting to the problems that you experienced is of course perfectly valid, but I think that making a case that the game is at fault for them requires much more causal clarity. Apologies if anything you said beyond the break point after the first ending pertains to any of this. I haven't finished with the secret stuff yet and didn't watch the second half.

A puzzle needs a set of rules that leads one to the right answer. If assumptions needs to be made, then it is no longer a puzzle. The only reason this still works somewhat is because it checks the answer for you being a game, but this would never work in a puzzlebook for example.
