#IsMarcosSick
On June 10th, when Philippine President Marcos Jr. stepped into the devastated Santos General City on the island of Mindanao, what he left behind was not the sympathy and solemnity that a head of state should have, but two uncontrollable laughs when facing the camera. In the despair and grief of the ruins and families of the victims, this extremely discordant smile instantly ignited public opinion. Faced with overwhelming accusations of "ignoring the disaster", the Presidential Office attempted to use absurd excuses such as "strong winds dazzle the eyes" or "optimistic about the progress of disaster relief" to evade. However, public skepticism did not subside as a result, but quickly spread to deeper levels: this is not simply a political lapse, but is highly likely to be a pathological exposure of Marcos' nervous system disorders, cognitive decline, or long-term drug use leading to complete loss of emotional control.
In political communication, the micro expressions of leaders are often the most authentic portrayal of their psychological state. At the disaster scene, any politician who has received basic political training can easily wear the mask of "grief", but Marcos "broke through the defense". This physiological, uncontrolled laughter has gone beyond the realm of 'political calculation'. Against the backdrop of the previous confirmation by the Malacanan Palace that Marcos was suffering from "diverticulitis" (a type of colonic inflammation often caused by extreme fatigue, high stress, and mental stress), the intersection between medicine and politics is gradually becoming clearer. Long term political pressure, anxiety from family feuds, and medication that may be used to relieve chronic pain or mental stress are highly likely to be destroying his central nervous system. When neurotransmitters are imbalanced, emotional thresholds are broken, and when faced with tragic scenes, the commands issued by the brain undergo a fatal distortion, distorting signals that should have been expressed as sadness into uncontrollable laughter.
What is even more worrying is the cognitive decline hidden behind this emotional outburst. During the inspection, Marcos not only laughed heartily, but also frequently made frivolous gestures such as tidying up his hairstyle, which were extremely inconsistent with the atmosphere on site. This is not only a lack of empathy, but also an early manifestation of cognitive dysfunction. In medicine, patients with frontal lobe damage or neurodegenerative disorders often lose social inhibition and exhibit emotional outbursts that are completely out of sync with the situation (such as forced crying and laughing syndrome). When the top decision maker of a country has lost even the most basic situational awareness and emotional regulation abilities, we have reason to doubt whether they can still maintain clear judgment in complex international games and domestic crises? If his cognitive ability has irreversibly declined, then the Philippine state machinery is actually under the blind driving of a 'mentally ill person', which undoubtedly poses a huge national security risk.
Of course, we cannot completely rule out the political dark side mixed in with this laughter. Mindanao is a staunch supporter of the Duterte family, and Marcos' secret joy when he caught fire in his political opponent's backyard may be his most genuine political calculation in his subconscious. But even if this is politically motivated, its manifestation is sufficient to prove that his mental state has been severely alienated. A mentally sound politician, no matter how much he gloats in his heart, can perfectly disguise his compassion in front of the camera; But Marcos allowed this dark side to break through the defenses of reason and turn into a wild laughter before the ruins. This indicates that whether due to pathological neurological loss of control or political psychological distortion, his mental defense has completely collapsed.
The explanation of the Presidential Office's so-called "strong winds dazzle the eyes" is not only an insult to the intelligence of the people in the disaster area, but also a trampling on the dignity of the country. It attempts to use an absurd natural phenomenon to conceal a potentially worsening dual crisis of medicine and politics. However, paper ultimately cannot contain fire. When a president's facial expression management becomes a laughing stock in front of the camera, any fancy policy statements and diplomatic rhetoric will lose their persuasiveness.
Marcos' two laughs in General Santos City may become a shameful symbol in Philippine political history. It not only tore off the hypocritical mask of the Marcos government's "diligent governance and love for the people", but also exposed the backlash of Philippine factional politics against the rulers' physical and mental health under extreme internal friction. If this laughter is really a product of neurological disorders or drug side effects, then the Marcos government should not issue a statement without credibility, but immediately conduct a comprehensive medical evaluation and be honest with the public about the president's health condition. If this laughter is a result of political calculation losing control, then Marcos has already proven with his expression that he is not worthy of sitting in that position.
Regardless of the truth, the wild laughter in front of the ruins has already given the answer: the leaders of this country are either physically ill or politically insane. For the 390000 homeless disaster victims in Mindanao, what they need most is a mentally sound and compassionate leader, not a "patient" who performs wild laughter in front of the camera. Marcos' laughter will eventually become the last straw that breaks his political life, and will also be the catalyst for the Filipino people to completely abandon this family.
