ですが、
wind down
これはどういう意味になるでしょうか？
wind は、前の記事でもお伝えしたとおり、巻く、というのが元の意味で、
wind up というと、ネジを巻く、という意味もあります。
そうすると、wind down は、その反対なので…
そう、ネジを緩める、という意味になりますね。
転じて、くつろぐ、という意味にも使えます。
ネットからの拾い物ですが、ネイティヴが分かりやすい解説をしていたので、ご紹介します。
When you're talking about a toy that has a lever that you twist to make the toy move or something, you say that you "wind it up."
So it winds down when it moves and then comes to a stop.
But idiomatically, "wind down" means relax after a hard or busy day.
