Otaru is ancient harbour of Sapporo.
She used to be one of the richest town 80 years ago because of fisheries and coal export. Even the first national bank is built here in Otaru rather than the capital town of Hokkaido Sapporo. Now all these money machines are gone, and Otaru shines an old lady smiling at her past beauty and glory. I don’t know why but there are such a lot of tourists from Chinese speaking part of the world in Otaru.

昔は石炭とお魚で札幌なんかよりずっと景気の良かった街でした。日本銀行も札幌の前に小樽に支店を作ったほど。今は中国語圏からのお客様がお金を落としていって下さる重要な観光都市です。でも夕方の運河の倉庫群はきれいですよねえ。寿司屋は馬鹿高いし人間も悪いので僕は一人では行きませんが。
