The two main contributors to heart disease which causes heart attacks are smoking and being overweight.Read How To Lose Weight?

Losing weight is not as difficult as you may think. It doesn’t mean you’ve got to eat “rabbit food” for the rest of your life. Here are some tips culled from experts and, more importantly, those who have achieved significant weight loss and have not returned to the previous unhealthy weight. A weight loss regime is all about common sense and a healthy balanced diet. Crash diets rarely work because people find them a shock to the system and are unhappy and demotivated.

Research and expert opinion indicates that people who are overweight tend to “bolt” or “ scoff down” their food. Meaning that they aim to get it from the plate to the mouth in as shorter time as possible. That not only means that the food will lay heavy on your stomach and take longer to be digested, but you will not be savoring the actual taste of the food. It’s been advised that if you masticate (chew) your food properly, up to 30 times this allows the enzymes in the saliva to start the digestive process and the stomach to be able to process less “lumps” which takes longer.

The next tip sounds so obvious, but few overweight people take heed of it. Eat until you are full and not beyond that. It is said that it takes approximately 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain that it is full, so at the very first point when you think you may have had enough food, stop! Don’t be tempted to hark back to what people said in the 20th century, that you had to “clean your plate”. Portions were much smaller then, and obesity wasn’t such a problem. If you can, save what you haven’t eaten, but if it can’t, throw it away (or give it to the cat) and next time remember to cook or ask for smaller portions.

Get away from the idea that you can lose weight by not eating. Skipping meals will result in failure. It is vital to maintain an even and level blood sugar level to prevent hunger and fatigue.

Now here’s a brilliant little tip: Use a smaller plate. It will give the impression that it’s full, and prevent you putting too much food on the plate. The same goes for wine or beer glasses if you drink alcohol. Get a half-pint mug or the smallest wine glass measure. Alcohol is calories!

Drink a lot of water or fruit juice instead, especially before or with a meal. This will make you feel fuller and eat less. Also water is one of man’s best friends, necessary for body temperature regulation and a host of other bodily requirements. Beginning to feel hungry between meals? Reach for a pint of water. I bet you won’t feel hungry after that!

You’ll need to do some exercise. This doesn’t have to be arduous. 30 minutes a day exercise that leaves breathing quickly (but not out of breath) is a good start

Finally, foods high in fiber release their carbohydrates slowly and keep you feeling full, and full of energy, for longer.
