Computer networks are divided into: Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network（MAN）and Wide Area Network (WAN). And what we are going to talk about today is the Ethernet in LAN, which is the most common communication protocol standard used in LAN today.
The History of Ethernet
As early as 1973, Dr. Robert Metcalfe developed a laboratory prototype system for Ethernet, which runs at a speed of 2.94 megabits per second (3Mbps). After more than three decades of development, Ethernet has become the standard for local area network, and its speed is 10000Mbps. The initial advances in Ethernet technology came from one of many pioneering technology projects at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center. Ethernet is generally thought to have been invented in 1973, when Robert Metcalfe wrote a memo to his PARC boss about the potential of Ethernet. But Mr. Metcalfe himself thinks Ethernet came a few years later. In 1976, Metcalfe and his assistant David Boggs published an article entitled “Ethernet: Distributed Packet Switching Technology for Local Computer Networks”. At the end of 1977, Metcalfe and his collaborators received a patent for “Multi-point Data Communication System With Conflict Detection”. The multipoint transmission system known as CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) marked the birth of Ethernet.
