鬼灯(ホオヅキ)の 葉蔭に隠る 夏の陽の 容赦もあらず 我が身を照らす

昨日都内晴れて殊に暑し
昼どき大なる帽子を被りて神田の町を歩く
町屋のまえ植込の葉蔭に鬼灯の手提鉢吊るされたり
帽子のほかに暑き陽を避くる術なき我が身を紅き実は葉蔭より嗤(わら)ふや
It was sunny and extremely hot in Tokyo yesterday.
At noon, I went for a walk around Kanda wearing a big hat.
A pot of Chinese lantern plant was hanging in the shade of the leaves in a planting in front of a house.
The Chinese lantern fruit seems to be laughing at me, as I have no protection from the sun except for my hat.
