I just finished reading おれは非情勤 by 東野圭吾, a book aimed at elementary school kids.Hehe… it’s the kind of thing you can read casually, and it was actually pretty fun. This kind of book is nice, isn’t it?Light, but still genuinely entertaining. And adults can totally enjoy it too.Actually, adults might enjoy it even more, thinking, “Ah, this kind of thing existed,” while reading. That said, because it’s so easy to read, I ended up picking up other books in between, so it took me longer than expected to finish (lol). But hey, that’s fine too.The main character is just called “Ore” the whole time.We never learn his full name. And somehow, while reading, I found myself imagining this 25-year-old “Ore” as Keigo Higashino himself. Not sure why (lol). To be honest, from today’s perspective, there are a few moments where you might think, “Wait, is that okay?” in terms of compliance and boundaries. But still… it’d be nice if a teacher like this actually existed.A bit unconventional, maybe even a little reckless, but someone who genuinely pays attention to the students.Reading this reminded me of my homeroom teacher back in middle school.I guess I’ve always liked that kind of teacher. As for the mysteries, there were definitely moments where I thought, “Wow, the teacher goes that far!?”But from a reader’s point of view, it’s easy to follow and properly entertaining.Even elementary school kids would probably enjoy trying to figure things out as they read, wondering what’s going to happen next. The two bonus stories at the end,“Find the Arsonist” and “A Call from a Ghost,”feature Ryuta-kun as the main character instead of “Ore.”They have a slightly different vibe, which makes them fun in their own way.Even though they’re just bonus stories, they leave a solid impression. And personally, one thing that really stood out to me was the use of Semedine glue (minor spoiler). That smell… so nostalgic. It’s the kind of trick that really belongs to its time. Also, the use of a home answering machine. These days, I wonder how many people would even relate to that. But still, I had one of those little “Ahh, so that’s how you could use it!” moments 💡If you’re looking for something light and quick to read, I’d definitely recommend this one.Ore wa Hijōkin—a really enjoyable book.It was published in 1997, so that’s about 29 years ago now.It might also be a nice read if you’re in the mood for a bit of nostalgia. via英語を使ってみるBasho Your own website, Ameba Ownd
