We're really big fans of the Ace Attorney games here at ONM.
The previous four titles in the series (that's Phoenix Wright, Justice For All, Trials And Tribulations and Apollo Justice, for those not keeping track) are all filled to the brim with courtroom drama, helped along by their fantastically well-written scripts and colourful characters.
Great as these games are though, they only ever show one side of the story. Your task is always to defend the suspect and prove they were innocent. Wouldn't it be just as fun - if not more so - to be the prosecutor instead, and make sure that the actual bad guys go to jail? Well, step forward Miles Edgeworth.
If you've been following the game's development, you may remember it under its working title of Perfeft Prosecutor, but obviously the Ace Attorney name has a good reputation and it would be silly of Capcom to drop that, so Ace Attorney Investigations it is.
Miies Better?
In case you haven't dabbled with the Phoenix Wright games before and you're not familiar with Edgeworth, he's essentially Wright's opposite.
While Wright had to go around interviewing witnesses to prove his client was not guilty, Edgeworth has to do the reverse-investigating crime scenes to prove the suspect is guilty.
The plot for Investigations is still being kept tightly under wraps, but let's just say it involves a number of murders, all related to Edgeworth in a way. It's up to him to investigate these murders and find out what's going on.
The change of focus from defense to prosecution also leads to a change in gameplay style. The crime scene sections of Investigations aren't played from a first person perspective as in the previous games in the series. Instead the camera over looks the whole scene and you have to move Edgeworth around in the style of a point and click adventure game like Sam & Max.
It's your job to study clues, obtain evidence and, in true Ace Attorney style, find contradictions to get to the truth and find out what's going on.
This leads to a whole new way of conducting investigations, which we have to admit was our least favourite part of the other Ace Attorney games (too much wandering around and hoping someone was at a certain location for our liking).
One of the new investigative tricks Miles has up his sleeve is his 'Logic' system. This involves taking two pieces of evidence that are found at the crime scene and combining them in some way to reveal new evidence. Expect plenty of "hmmm, two torn pieces of a note - what should I do" hi-jinks.
Character Profiles
Part of the investigation process involves talking to characters who are already at the crime scene in order to get more information. Among these characters is Dick Gumshoe, everyone's favourite big brainless detective and one of the best characters in the whole series in our opinion, so naturally we're glad to see our old pal back.
Although it's not quite certain which other characters will feature in the game, we're hopeful that, seeing as the game should roughly take place during the same time line, Phoenix Wright should make an appearance at some point. That's not to say he's anything to do with the story. of course - Edgeworth is the star here - we're just saying it'd be nice to see him again. And if that pesky slap head judge isn't in there, it'd be a serious - ahem - in justice.
Of course, there will be a whole host of brand new characters too. The most important of these is Kay Faraday, a cheeky young lass who helps out Miles Edgeworth in his various investigations.
She's got a bit of a habit of nicking stuff though, so Edgey has to keep an eye on her at times. She's basically the 'funny one' in the team, much like Maya provided comic support in the Phoenix Wright games.
Ace Attorney Investigations looks like it's going to give the series the much - needed kick up the backside we've been waiting a while for. Fingers crossed that the gameplay and plot live up to all the potential on show.
