Sometimes, the Games of Olympiad have been used as a tool to unite a nation. I’ll show you the best (rather worst!) example, the one which was held in berlin, German in 1936. This was the 11th Olympic Games. Those days, German was ruled by the Nazis. Adolf Hitler made use of holding the Games of Olympiad to propaganda its political policy to all over the world.
Then, I’ll briefly mention to one of his thoughts. Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, they had the thought that Arian people is the greatest in the all human beings. In other words, they regarded the people who have golden hair, blue eyes and light-skin are superior to other races. And they hoped that Arian people would exclusively win all the events, track and field or swimming. If it was successful, they could show many countries that their thought is right.
In this Olympic Game, they introduced the Olympic Torch relay in the first time. Although it has been continued now, it had great meaning for Hitler. Can you imagine how they used it? As you know, in the Olympic Torch relay, runners go around many countries. It is said that they investigated roads or geographical features of the countries which located the relay’s route. Three years after, they used the route to invade in the World War Ⅱ.
However, there was a result which they didn’t expect. It was the achievements of American players, especially black people. The result of the Olympic Games, the medals of track and field were almost gotten by them. On the other hand, Hitler and Nazis wanted to be gotten by Arian people, one of the Black people, Jesse Owens gained four golden medals in 100m, 200m, 400m relay and running long jump.
In conclusion, from the political point of view, we can say that the 11th Olympic game held in Berlin was almost done on Nazis purpose. They could show around world their dignities. On the other aspect, they could also use sports as a tool to unite their country to regard personal result as national result.
