Benjamin's Sorrow
The last male Tasmanian tiger, named Benjamin, died in 1936 at Hobart Zoo in Tasmania, Australia.
European settlers began killing an estimated 5,000 Tasmanian tigers, blaming them for the deaths of their sheep and cattle. The government also offered bounties to encourage the extermination.
How much time did Benjamin spend alone, alone with no one around him?
But the last one was not Benjamin.
In 1936, the year Benjamin died, a local hunter captured a female Tasmanian tiger and sold it to the Hobart Zoo. However, the traps used by the hunter were prohibited, and the contract of sale was not recorded for fear of punishment if the Authorities found out.
Benjamin lost even the sad honor of being the last one.
He lives on in a few minutes of film.

ベンジャミンの悲しみ
ベンジャミンと名付けられた最後の一頭のオスのタスマニアタイガーは1936年、オーストラリア、タスマニア州にあるホバート動物園で死亡した。ヨーロッパからの入植者が家畜の羊や牛が死んだのはタスマニアタイガーのせいだと生息していた推定5000頭を殺し始めたのだ。政府も懸賞金を出して駆除を奨励した。
周りに誰もいなくなってひとりきりになったベンジャミンの孤独な時間って一体どれ程だったんだろう。
ところが最後の一頭はベンジャミンではなかった。
ベンジャミンが亡くなった1936年に地元の猟師がタスマニアタイガーのメスを捕獲しホバート動物園に売り渡した。しかし猟師の使った罠は禁止されており、当局に知られると罰せられる恐れがあり売買契約は記録に残されなかった。
最後の一頭という悲しい名誉さえ失ったベンジャミン。
数分間のフィルムの中で生き続ける。
