In many government exams it is not enough to cross the overall cut-off. Each section of the paper has its own minimum, and falling short in one section fails the whole attempt.

Where the rule is stated

The exam pattern in the notification says whether cut-offs are sectional, overall, or both. Banking and insurance exams commonly use sectional minimums; many others use only an overall figure.

How it changes your strategy

With sectional cut-offs you cannot ignore a weak subject and make up the marks elsewhere. Give your weakest section a fixed share of exam time, enough to clear its minimum safely, before returning to your strengths.

Sectional timing

Some papers also lock each section to a time limit. You cannot go back, so the order of questions within a section matters more than the order of sections.

In practice tests

Record your marks section by section, not only the total. A steady total can hide one section that is drifting below the line.

Reading the result

Scorecards show sectional marks against the minimum for your category. If you did not qualify despite a good total, this is the first place to look.
