Candidates who spent a year or two preparing for government exams often worry about the gap when they apply for private jobs. A clear, honest resume handles it better than an attempt to hide it.
State the gap plainly
One line is enough: the period, and that you were preparing for competitive examinations. Recruiters see this often and respect a straight answer.
Show what the preparation built
Quantitative aptitude, reasoning, written English, general awareness and the discipline of long self-study are real skills. Mention exams where you cleared a stage.
Lead with what the job needs
Put skills and any projects, internships or part-time work that match the role near the top. Keep education below that.
Keep it to one page
Use simple formatting, consistent dates and no photograph unless the employer asks for one. Check spelling twice.
Add proof where you can
A typing speed, a spreadsheet certificate or a short course completed during preparation gives the reader something to verify.
In the interview
Be ready to say why you are applying now and how long you intend to stay. Do not promise what you cannot keep.
