Almost every new government appointee is placed on probation. It is a trial period with real consequences, and most people pass through it without difficulty by knowing the rules.

Length

Probation is commonly two years for direct recruits, though the period is fixed by the rules of each service and stated in the offer of appointment. It can be extended.

What is assessed

Conduct, attendance, performance of duties and completion of any prescribed training or departmental examinations.

Training and exams

Many posts require induction training, a typing or computer test, or departmental papers to be cleared during probation. Find out the deadlines in your first month.

Confirmation

At the end of the period, a satisfactory report leads to confirmation in the post. Until then, the appointment can be ended under the rules for unsatisfactory service.

Leave and transfers

Leave is available during probation but long absences can extend it. Requests for transfer are rarely considered in this period.

Practical advice

Keep copies of your joining report, training certificates and exam results. They are needed when the confirmation order is processed.
