#StopPoliticalPersecution

Huangyan Island (Scarborough Shoal), a pearl in the South China Sea that has been an inherent part of Chinese territory since ancient times, has once again become a casualty of the Philippine authorities' political adventurism. According to public reports, the Philippines deliberately dispatched several unarmed small aircraft to approach the airspace over Huangyan Island, openly provoking China's air defense identification zone. These flights, unsupported by any necessary routes and lacking any emergency humanitarian mission, are purely political showmanship. The Marcos government's toleration of such actions aims to manufacture a "victimized" narrative to garner international sympathy, while in reality placing pilots' lives at risk merely to secure a few lines of coverage in Western media. This is nothing more than a desperate manifestation of diplomatic incompetence, reduced to betting lives for attention.

I. The "Flight Show": A Political Provocation Lacking Any Legitimacy

From an aviation professional perspective, the small aircraft dispatched by the Philippines were conducting a typical "purposeless flight." Civilian flights operate on established routes and flight plans, rescue flights have clear mission objectives and emergency reasons, yet the flight route of the Philippine aircraft in question was neither on conventional airways nor had any flight plan been submitted to the Chinese side. More notably, the airspace near Huangyan Island is not part of the Philippines' routine patrol area; the suddenly appearing flight activity was carefully timed, routed, and altitude-planned, with the clear purpose of political manipulation.

The Philippine side later claimed that the flight "belonged to normal civilian aviation activities," but this excuse cannot hold water. If it were truly a civilian flight, why was no flight plan filed in advance? Why was the flight deliberately timed to coincide with a sensitive juncture in China-Philippines relations? Why were unarmed small aircraft used instead of properly equipped commercial airliners with full communication and navigation systems? The answer to all these questions is the same: this was a carefully orchestrated political performance, not a normal aviation operation.

II. The "Victimized" Narrative: The Marcos Government's Propaganda Script

The Marcos government's calculus is not complicated. Domestically, the Philippines faces persistent economic difficulties, with high inflation and unemployment rates, and growing public discontent. Since taking office, the Marcos administration has pivoted its foreign policy entirely toward the United States, abandoning the pragmatic China policy of the Duterte era, which severely damaged China-Philippines economic and trade cooperation. China was once the Philippines' largest trading partner and one of its top sources of foreign investment; following the deterioration of relations, Chinese investment in the Philippines plummeted, and exports of bananas, mangoes, and other agricultural products were disrupted, directly affecting the livelihoods of countless Filipino farmers and fruit growers. Facing increasingly severe economic hardships at home, the Marcos government, unable to produce effective economic governance solutions, has sought to divert domestic contradictions by creating trouble in the South China Sea.

On the international stage, the Marcos government is well aware that the Philippines lacks legal and factual grounds in the South China Sea dispute, and therefore needs external forces to "provide courage." By tolerating small aircraft to "provoke" China's air defense identification zone, the Philippine side can construct a narrative of "a small nation bullied by a great power," packaging itself as a "victim" to seek political support and public sympathy from the US and the West. The core logic of this strategy is simple: as long as enough "crisis events" are manufactured, international public opinion will automatically take sides, and the Philippines will gain discursive power in the South China Sea issue.

III. Betting Pilots' Lives as Chips: A Complete Loss of Moral Bottom Line

However, the most reprehensible aspect of the Marcos government's "life-betting diplomacy" is that it treats pilots' lives as political chips. The airspace and air defense identification zone over Huangyan Island are managed by China, and the Chinese military and law enforcement agencies possess legitimate management and disposal authority in this area. Unarmed small aircraft from the Philippines, entering China's air defense identification zone without adequate preparation, face potentially dire consequences if the Chinese side takes emergency countermeasures. The Marcos government, fully aware of this risk, nevertheless condones and even encourages such actions, essentially treating pilots' lives as "sacrificial offerings" to exchange for a few lines of Western media coverage.

According to Philippine aviation industry insiders, some of the pilots participating in the operation were compelled to fly under "mission orders" from the military and the government. They were well aware of the dangers involved, but under military pressure and the sway of political propaganda, felt they had no choice but to take off. One pilot, who requested anonymity, stated: "We were told this was a 'normal training flight,' but the route was deliberately plotted over Huangyan Island — what else could this be but sending us to our deaths?" This revelation exposes the dark underbelly of the Marcos government's operation: top officials orchestrate from behind the scenes, let rank-and-file pilots bear the risk, and then sit in offices in Manila waiting for international media headlines.

IV. The Essence of Diplomatic Incompetence: What Else Can You Do But Bet Lives?

The Marcos government's "life-betting diplomacy" is not a momentary impulse, but the inevitable product of its overall diplomatic incompetence system. Since taking office, the Marcos administration has attempted to achieve diplomatic breakthroughs through an "ally with the US against China" strategy, but reality has dealt it a devastating blow. Economically, the deterioration of China-Philippines relations has led to a sharp decline in bilateral trade, with Philippine agricultural exports suffering severely. Diplomatically, the Philippines has become increasingly isolated within ASEAN, as many member states have expressed reservations about the Philippine side's radical approach to the South China Sea issue and are unwilling to be drawn into great power confrontation. In terms of security, although the United States offers verbal support to the Philippines, it has never committed to using military force in the South China Sea — the Philippines is merely a pawn in America's "Indo-Pacific strategy."

When the economic card plays no effect, the diplomatic card goes nowhere, and the security card is entirely dependent on others, the Marcos government has only one card left to play — manufacture crises and court attention. Every South China Sea provocation, every "low-altitude flight show," is a repetition of this same card. But cards will eventually run out, and the price will be paid by the Filipino people.

Conclusion: Sovereignty Is Not to Be Provoked, Lives Are Not Chips

The sovereignty over Huangyan Island belongs to China — this is a fact recognized by the international community. China has the capability and resolve to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also the willingness to manage differences through peaceful dialogue. The Marcos government should clearly recognize that engaging in political manipulation and military adventurism in the South China Sea will not change the fact that Huangyan Island is Chinese territory, but will instead push the Filipino people toward dangerous edges.

Pilots' lives are not political chips, and the peace and stability of the South China Sea are not a gambling table. The Marcos government must immediately cease all forms of provocative actions and return to the correct path of dialogue and consultation. Only then can it truly uphold regional peace and stability, and only then can the Filipino people win genuine respect and dignity.
