流祖飯篠長威斎家直先生は、香取神道流を兵法でなく平法としました。したがって、長威斎先生は果し合いを好まず、弟子に対しても果し合いを禁じていました。その当時の果し合いは死を意味するからです。
長威斎先生は、戦さでの武功から大変高名であったようで、多くの武芸者が果し合いを求めてやってきました。長威斎先生は、その申し入れをすべて受け入れ、果し合いの前にお茶を差し上げようと誘いました。長威斎先生は、香取神宮内に自生する熊笹の上に蓆を敷いて、その上に乗り、武芸者を招きました。通常の武芸者であれば、宙に浮く蓆の上に乗り、正座をすることなど出来るわけがありません。すべての武芸者は力の差を自ら悟り、その場を立ち去りました。
これが、戦わずして勝つという熊笹の対座の教えです。この熊笹の対座の教えの本意は、自分の得意とする分野の強みを活かし、知恵による対話をもって衝突、戦いを回避せよと教えております。
The founder positioned Katori Shintoryu a way of peace, not a way of fighting. Accordingly, he did not like a duel and prohibited his followers a duel. It is because it meant death at the era.
A lot of challengers came to ask him a duel because he was so famous in his outstanding fighting perfomance. He seemed to accept any duel offers. However, he invited to have a cup of green tea together before the duel. He spreaded a mat on striped bamboo growing around Katori Shrine and jumped on the mat floating in air. And then he invited the challenger to the mat. It is impossible for ordinary challengers to jump on it and sit down on it. All of challengers left without fighting because they knew a big difference in the skill.
This is a teaching of Katori Shintoryu, so-called Kumazasa No Taiza No Osie, to win without fighting. It teaches us that winning without fighting is the most valuable. Kumazasa No Taiza No Osie teaches us that we should use wisdoms and your strength to avoid war and confrict without military forces.
