ある時、若い二人の侍が流祖飯篠長威斎家直先生を訪ね、入門を申し出たそうです。 一人の侍は、利発そうなイケメンの若者でした。 もう一人の侍は、いかにも、もう一人の侍に連れられてきたという若者でした。
二人の若い侍が入門して三か月が過ぎました。 利発そうなイケメン侍は、みるみる間に剣術の腕を上げてゆきました。 もう一人の侍は、腕を上げた若いイケメン侍と自分の腕をいつも比べて、自分の才能のなさを嘆き、もう一人の若いイケメン侍を妬んでいました。
ある日、長威斎先生は、その侍に ”他人と比べることなく、自分は何のために香取神道流の修行をするのか、そのために何をすべきなのか、それが今、どの程度出来ているのか を１日の終わりに少しの時間を割いて考えなさい、そうすれば、あなたの腕は飛躍するだろう。” とおしゃったそうです。
その若い侍は、長威斎先生の教えを素直に守り、毎日、寝る前に自問自答したようです。 それから、その侍は別人のように成りました。 他人を羨むことを止め、一心不乱に稽古に打ちこんだそうです。
One day, two young worriers came to the founder to become a follower. One looked to be very smart, but another one looked to be a person who was taken by the smart and nice-looking one.
Three months have passed since two joined Katori Shintoryu. One, who looked to be very smart, has increased his sword technique very rapidly. Another one always complained his poor talent of the sword technique and envyed the smart one in comparison with his ability of the sword technique.
One day, the founder advised him that you should think why you practice Katori Shintoryu, what you need to do for it, and what progress you made so far without comparison with others, every night.
If so, your technique will become more sophisticated.
The young worrier questioned and answered himself about the questions every night based on the founder's advice. Since then, he has changed. He devoted himself to the practice everyday without envying others.
