若侍は毎日、悩み続けました。 何のために人生を生きるのか、誰のために生きたらよいのか、どのように生きるべきなのか、自問しても答えが出ず悶々と過ごす日々の中で、香取神道流の稽古だけは続けておりました。
ある年の師走の稽古の終わりに、流祖飯篠長威斎家直先生が正月に若侍に免許を授けることを告げました。 若侍は一瞬、何が起こったのか判断がつきませんでした。 先輩が肩を叩いて褒め称え、後輩が深い礼をもって敬意を表してくれました。 若侍に喜びが込み上げてきました。
若侍は家に帰り、縁側に座り、喜びに浸りながら夜空を見上げました。 振り返れば、入門して１２年が過ぎておりました。 イケメン侍が免許を取った時、嫉妬して放蕩三昧を繰り返したことを思い出しました。 今は、多くの後輩が自分より早く免許を授与されても嫉妬することなく怒ることもなく、自分の技が未熟であることを冷静に認められます。
若侍は、長威斎先生が何故、未熟な自分に免許を授けようと決められたのかと思い巡らしました。 そして、”香取神宮経津主大神の技に比べれば、どんな人の技も赤子の技と知るべし、 天地を敬い、経津主大神を敬い、己の未熟を知り稽古に励むべし”と長威斎先生がおっしゃったことを思い出しました。 他人と比べるのでなく、冷静に己の未熟を知り、永遠に己を高めてゆく決心こそ大事と感じました。
長威斎先生が若侍に免許を授けると告げた翌日から、周りの者の見る目が変わりました。 しかし、若侍は、長威斎先生が免許を授けると告げる前日と告げた翌日の自分の技が変わらないことを知っておりました。 何も変わらないことを知っておりました。 周りの声に惑わされず、決して、奢ってはならないと自分に言い聞かせました。 免許は香取神道流剣術の技の習得の終わりでなく、自分の未熟を知り、永遠に自分を高めてゆく出発点であると言い聞かせました。
The young worrier was distressed everyday. He continuously practiced Katori Shintoryu everyday while questioning himself about what he lives for, who he lives for, and how he should live, without the answers.
One day of December, the founder said to his followers, "The certificate will be given to the young worrier on new year day". The young worrier could not understand what the founder said. His seniors applauded by tapping his shoulders. His juniors expressed thier respect to him by deeply bowing. He was filled with delight.
The young worrier looked at night sky while sitting on Engawa and being filled with joy after he got back home. 12 years has passed since he joined Katori Shintoryu. He remembered he was deluded into Sake and prostitute due to jealousy when his friend, nice-looking worrier, got the certificate.
Recently he knows and accepts his pre-matured sword technique without jealousy against others, even though his juniors got the certificate.
He thought why the founder decided to give the certificate to him who was pre-matured. He remenbered what the founder said, "The sword technique of human beings is like techinique of a baby compared to that of God, so-called Futsunushi No Ohmikami living in Katori Shrine. Do hard training with knowing your pre-matured technique". He thought it was the most important for him to upgrade myself forever with knowing his immature and without comparing with others.
He was respected by others from the day after the founder announced the certificate was given to him. However, he knew there was no difference in the sword technique between before and after the announcement. He knew nothing had changed. He said to himself, "Never be haughty, and the certificate is a start of upgrading himself forever while knowing his immature, not an end of learning Katori Shintoryu.
