I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.
僕がJ・K・ローリングと喧嘩状態になっていると思い込みたいメディアの報道をいくつか見かける。そういった報道は別に僕と彼女との仲違いとかいう問題でもなく、今大切なものとは何か、という話でもない。彼女は僕が歩んだ人生において相当の責任を負ってるわけだけど、過去10年間トレバー・プロジェクト（※1）と活動する栄誉を授かった人物として、そしてまたひとりの人間として、今回の件について発言せずにはいられない気がしている。

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.
トランスジェンダーの女性たちは女性なんだ。これに反する他のどんな声明もトランスジェンダーの人たちのアイデンティティと尊厳を消し去ってしまうものに他ならず、こういった問題について彼女や僕よりはるかに経験のあるプロフェッショナルや専門的期間から与えられるどんなアドバイスにも反するもの。トレバー・プロジェクトによれば、トランスジェンダーやノンバイナリーの若者の78％がジェンダー・アイデンティティのせいで差別の標的にされている。僕たちが彼らをサポートする必要性はこのことから明らかだ。彼らのアイデンティティをないことにしたり、さらに傷つけたりするのではなく。

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.
今回のコメントによって傷つき、『ハリー・ポッター』シリーズの読書経験が今回の件によって汚されたり、意味を削られてしまったりする気がしている全ての人たちに対して、真摯にお詫び申し上げたいと思う。あの物語で得た価値観を全て失わないでいて欲しいと願う。もしあのシリーズが、愛はどんなものも克服する、この宇宙の中で最も強い力だとあなたに教えてくれたのなら：強さとはダイバーシティの内にあること、そしてシリーズ全体に通底するピュアでドグマ的なアイデアこそが、弱いグループに対する抑圧を導いたと教えたならば：もしあなたが特定のキャラクターについてトランスジェンダー、ノンバイナリーやジェンダーフルイド（※3）、あるいはゲイやバイセクシュアルだと信じているとしたら：そしてあのシリーズに共感し寄り沿い、人生のある時期において自分を助けてくれたことがあるとしたら - あなたの読書体験は真にあなとその本の間だけのことで、神聖なものなんだ。僕個人の意見だけれど、その経験は誰にも触れる権利がないものと考える。あなたがあのシリーズから感じたものが全てだし、今回のコメントによってそれがあまり汚されないでいてほしいと願っている。
