on call

英語カフェでの一節です。

今回は、on call という表現を学びました。

S:スタッフさん🇨🇦、A:お客さん（医師）、K:私

K: What is your professional area?

A: My professional area is respiratory and pulmonary, like, lung cancer, pneumonia, asthma, and so on.

K: What difficult words! Do you have to work extra hours?

A: Yeah. But it is more restricted than before. We have to record the working time by time-cards from this year.

K: In my company, it is also strictly managed. The PC login and logout times are always checked.

S: Oh, really? That’s rare for Japanese companies. Most Japanese companies ask for overwork, right?

K: No, the situation has changed a lot recently. Several years ago, a girl committed suicide due to extreme overworking. Since then, the government forces us not to work too much.

S: I see. 

A: But sometimes I get a call from the hospital in the mid night for emergency cases.

S: That’s too bad. You always have to be on call. You can’t take a rest even while you are at home.

英語カフェのメリットとして、普段接点がないような人たちと話すことができます。

今回は医師の方と話すことができました。

若い方でしたが、病院でも外国人と話す機会が増えており、英語が必要とのこと。

残業について話しましたが、勤務時間の管理は普通の企業だけでなく病院でも以前より厳しくなっているとのこと。

スタッフさんは日本人は過労であるというイメージを持っていますが、その状況は少しずつ変わりつつあるということを伝えしました。

医師の特徴として、寝てる時でも急患が入れば病院に呼び出されるということがあると思います。

その状態は on call と表現されます。

いつでも呼び出されたら対応できるように待機しているという状態で、医療関係では「オンコール」という専門用語となっているようです。
