サンタクロース追跡情報をNORADが公開するサービス。
NORADはアメリカ軍とカナダ軍で作る北米航空宇宙防衛司令部で、クリスマスの時期だけ人工衛星や世界中にあるカメラを駆使し、サンタクロースの追跡に当たっているそう。
さて、今日はクリスマス！
クリスマスの話をするにはあまりにも色々な問題を踏まえないといけないので、どの立場にも立たず、一カルチャーとしてお話したいと思う。
クリスマスの由来は、イエス・キリストの降誕を祝う祭日。
詳細は色々な説があるので割愛するが、一番メジャーなクリスマスの話といえば、キリストがユダヤのベツレヘムで生まれた話。
そこからキリスト教を信仰する人が多くを占める国では、クリスマスの日には家族で過ごし、モミの木の下にプレゼントを置き、キリスト教で大切に説われている「愛」を確認する日とされている。
日本では、クリスマスが恋人同士のイベントと広まっているが、キリスト教圏では家族で過ごす日という考えがメジャーだ。日本でいうお正月の様な感じ。
アメリカの田舎にいた頃、サンクスギビングが終わるとクリスマスツリーを飾る為、雪山に木を切りに行った覚えがある。天井すれすれの大きな木を家に持ち帰り、オーナメントでデコレーションして、サンクスギビングから一気にクリスマスの雰囲気に変わる。クリスマスプレゼントは毎回、サンクスギビング後のブラックフライデーで大量購入。（サンクスギビング後の金曜日がブラックフライデーと呼ばれ、年に一度の大セールの日。日本でいう、お正月のセールの様な感じ。）それぞれの名前が書いた小さなカードをつけてツリーの下に。25日まで徐々に増えていくプレゼントの山を見てワクワクしていた記憶がある。知り合いは、クリスマスの日に公園へ行き、ホームレスの人たちに炊き出しのイベントを行っていた。隣人愛を大切にした一日だ。
日本では、ハロウィーンが終わった頃から、クリスマスツリーと赤い大きな靴下を飾り、小さな頃はサンタさんへ宛てた手紙を靴下の中に入れて置いた。すると、25日の朝には靴下がもっこりしていて、手紙でお願いしておいたプレゼントが届いている。たまに希望と違う物が届く年もあった気がするが、、。
大人たちは、恋人と予約したレストランで食事をしたり、KFCをテイクアウトしたり、クリスマスムードの中それぞれが選んだプレゼントを交換する。
みんなそれぞれ、異なったクリスマスカルチャーを楽しんでいる。どの習慣も、人との繋がりを再確認するという素敵なカルチャー性を感じる。
今日、2013年の12月25日、皆さんはどんなクリスマスを送っているでしょうか。
今日、25日の世界では、「イスラエルの空爆で子供が死亡」、「シリア難民 静かなクリスマス」、「南スーダン 死者さらに増加か」、「エジプト爆弾テロ多数の死傷者」、「フィリピンの台風被災地で聖夜の祈り」など、まだまだ沢山の心痛む事実が起きている。
日本でも、いまだに震災の傷が深く残っている今日。
小さな頃に感じていたクリスマスのわくわく感。世界共通で全ての子供に、平等に、あるはずのもの。
今すぐ大きな力になれる訳ではないけど、自分たちにできる小さな事を積み上げていきたいなと常に心に置いて、一人でも多くの幸せを、今日この日に願います。

Yes, today is Christmas.
There are way too many arguments on Christmas topic especially when you talk about religion, so I’d like to talk about Christmas as one fun “culture”.
Christmas is well known as the day people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And now in these days, they decorate the tree, put many presents, and celebrate Christmas with their beloved families.
In Japan, Christmas is considered as big event for the couple, but New Year is more family event.
Remembering when I was in U.S, I went up the heavily snowed mountain to cut a tree, and brought it back to my home to decorate. Also I remember shopping on the black friday to find goodies for my family’s Christmas gift. Looking at the boxes keep piling up under the tree was very exciting.
On the other hands, my friend spent Christmas at the park serving hot meal for homeless people. She spent a day with full of “neighbor love”.
In Japan, we start to decorate our houses with christmas tree and big red socks right after the halloween. All kids get so excited about Santa coming to their houses with presents they asked on letters which are hidden in socks. Sometimes they get disappointed by getting different toy…(it happened to me pretty often.)
For adults, Christmas is more couple thing. Some go to nice restaurant, and some cerebrates Christmas at home with KFC, but every couple enjoy the mood of Christmas, and gift presents each other.
Everyone is having different Christmas, enjoying different culture, but I see beautiful human connection in all culture.

Today, on the Christmas day, there are many sad news spoiling the Christmas in the world. “Sad Christmas and hopeless New Year in South Sudan“, “In Philippine city of Tacloban, a conflicted Christmas for typhoon victims“, “New Syrian refugee is born every hour“, more and more sad news are popping up every minutes. Also in Japan, there are still many people suffering from the earthquake occurred in 2011.
Remembering the excitement of Christmas I had in my childhood… It should be given to all children, all people equally.
It might not be a great thing, but we believe we can keep doing small things to make our world better…wishing all people (as many people as possible) have a wonderful Christmas filled with peace, joy, health and happiness.
