ニューヨーク州グレンコーヴで、アフリカ系アメリカ人と中国人のハーフの父とアフリカ系アメリカ人の母の間に生まれる。名前の由来は、旧アフリカの国「Ashanti Confederacy」から名付けられた。2002年4月に『ASHANTI』でデビュー、発売一週間後の売上数はギネス記録となり、現在では世界で500万枚を超える。2003年5月にリリースした2ndアルバム『チャプターⅡ』からは「ロック･ウィズ・U」が世界的なヒットとなり、全米アルバム･チャートにて2作連続となる初登場1位を記録、300万枚を超えるセールスを売り上げている。また、アシャンティはこれまでのシングルを最も多くUrban Radio ChartのTOP10に送り込んだ唯一のアーティストとしても認定されている。
