現れた…バーバラ。

「彼が残したもの…」
タイトルでわかるように、
フレディがいなくなってからのこと。
フィービーが、その後
どのように生きていったのか…
そんなことも書かれています。
The relationship between the two leading ladies in Freddie’s life is based on him and them, individually, existing at either end of an axis of opposites. Most of Freddie’s deep friendships existed because of his feelings of guilt. Barbara, on the other hand, differed from the others because Freddie attached no guilt to their relationship as his knowing her had not drastically altered her circumstances. Barbara was already a star in her own right, having appeared in films in Europe for a generation. From the first time they met in the New York Bar in Munich, there was an attraction.
フレディの人生において重要な2人の女性。
その関係性は、正反対だった。
フレディの、深い友情関係は
大体が罪の意識からくるものだった。
しかし、バーバラは違う。
フレディはバーバラに対して罪の意識はなかった。2人の関係が、バーバラの環境を大きく変えることがないと知っていたからだ。
バーバラはすでにヨーロッパ映画界のスターだった。
ミュンヘンのバー「New York」で2人は初めて出会い、すぐに惹かれあった。
Barbara was an incredibly strong woman who was there, literally, to protect Freddie whilst walking in the streets or shopping but more intimately looking after his heart and ensuring that the grief he got from the various boyfriends he had, mainly Winnie Kirchberger, was not of the mortal kind.
バーバラは非常に強い女性で、
フレディが外を歩いたり、買い物をする時、
実際に、彼を守っていた。
それだけでなく、フレディがいろんなボーイフレンドから受ける心の傷や悲しみを受け止めていた。ほとんどが、あのウィニー…
When he was in Munich, they met up every day, went shopping in Beck’s department store, which would always lead to tea at Dallmayers where Barbara would pick up an assortment of cheeses, ham and other delicatessen delicacies. They would go to eat at Kafer’s restaurant on the other side of the river and perhaps start on their tour of the bars at three in the afternoon, a fun-fest which would last until the early hours of the following morning. Freddie would be on his favourite vodka and tonic and Barbara would imbibe several brandies and cola. Their routine hardly varied.
フレディはミュンヘンにいる時、
毎日バーバラと会っていた。
デパートに買い物に行き、
ダルマイヤーでお茶をして、
バーバラはハムやデリを買った。
川の反対側のレストランで食事をしてから
午後3時からバーを巡り、翌朝まで盛り上がった。
フレディは、ウォッカトニック、
バーバラはブランデーコーラ。
いつもお決まりのコースだった。
I know Barbara loved Freddie and as far as he would have been able to identify the feeling, he loved her. I know that on occasion he spent the night in her apartment but I don’t think that Freddie ever went the final mile and consummated their mutual love in a sexual way although I emphasise that this is my personal opinion.
バーバラはフレディを愛していた。
そして、フレディもおそらくバーバラを愛していたであろう。
フレディはバーバラの部屋で過ごすこともあったが、最後の一線は超えていないと思う、、
あくまでも、私の個人的意見ですが。
Barbara’s flat, for in fact this is what the apartment apartment was, remained one of the very few homes of other people where Freddie would visit comfortably. He would usually decline, politely, even his closer friends’ invitations even for drinks or coffee.
バーバラの部屋は、
フレディが快適に訪れることのできる、
数少ない場所だった。
フレディは、親しい友人からお茶に誘われても
いつも丁寧に断っていた。
Freddie trusted Barbara implicitly and almost to exemplify this, they decided to buy an apartment together at number five, Hans Sachsstrasse in the middle of the now fully-flowered gay community, in the centre of old Munich.
フレディはバーバラを信頼していた。
その証として、ミュンヘンの
Hans Sachsstrasse 5番地、ゲイコミュニティの中心にあるアパートを共同購入した。
As soon as the paint was dry on the apartment’s walls, Freddie stopped going back to Munich.
In hindsight, it was as though he himself had started to dig the grave of the relationship.
アパートが完成すると、
フレディはミュンヘンに行くことをやめた。
今思うと、フレディ本人が、
2人の関係に終止符を打ったようだった。
Make it too permanent and Freddie would get cold feet. It was almost as though sharing was an impossibility for him.
安定しすぎると、
フレディはしりごみする。
フレディにとって、共有することは
不可能のようだった。
さて、
どうなんでしょう？
バーバラは、
フレディにとって
リラックスして羽を伸ばすことのできる、
気が合う友人だったのかな。
きっと、
悪いことも、ワイルドなことも、
たくさん一緒にしてたはず。
最後は…
近くなりすぎて
重たくなって、離れていったのかな。
フレディの
人間関係の構築に関してのアンバランス。
幼い頃に親元を離れて
インドの寄宿学校で過ごした体験。
大きな影響を及ぼしていると思うと…
この頃のフレディを
ぎゅっと抱きしめてあげたいと
思うのです。
