こんにちは。今日はバンガロールオフィスのジャパンデスクより、バンガロールについてお話したいと思います。基本情報:インド南部・カルナータカ州の州都。南アジア有数のグローバル都市。デカン高原の上に位置し、標高は920m。都市の人口は616万人(2006年)に達し、インド第3の人口を誇る大きな都市です。2005年に都市の名をカンナダ語での名称に合わせ「ベンガルー(Bengalūru)」に改名しましたが、まだまだ「バンガロール」という呼び名のほうが強く残っております。気候:バンガロールの気候は、高原にあるためインドの他都市と比較すると穏やかで涼しく、カラっとしています。インドのガイドブックには「インドで最も過ごしやすい気候」と載っており、私がバンガロールで働きたい!と思った一番の理由です。バンガロールの話になると、この気候の良さは必ず話題に出てきます。人口:タミル人、テルグ人、その他北インドの労働者がカントンメントやその都市基盤の建設のために他地方から流入した模様で、北インドと比べると人種構成が大きく異なっているように感じます。宗教:2001年の国勢調査では、ヒンドゥー教徒が79.37%、ムスリムが13.37%と、ほぼ全国の宗教構成と近い値でありますが、町の人の話によるとヒンドゥー、ムスリム、キリスト教徒がバランスよく住んでいるとのことです。私も町を歩いていますと、他の都市よりもイスラム教徒の割合が多いように感じます。ヒンドゥー教の色が強くないからか、北インドで最高に盛り上がるホーリーというお祭りもバンガロールではそれほど派手ではなく、私は個人的に少しガッカリしてしまいました。しかし南インドは州ごとに様々なお祭りがあります。地域の特色が見所でもあります。識字率は83%とムンバイに次ぐ全国2位の高さです。英語を話せる割合がとても高く、職場では英語を使う、という人も多いみたいです。インドのシリコンバレー:IT産業の集積する南インド諸都市の中でも、バンガロールは「インドのシリコンバレー」と呼ばれるようにインドのソフトウェア輸出に最大の貢献を果たしています。バンガロールはインドにおける科学研究、近代工業の中心地の一つで、インド科学研究所の他に航空機、機械、電気、精密機械などの諸工業が立地しています。第2次大戦後の発展は著しく、市の郊外にはこれらの諸工場や住宅地が広がっています。デリーやその他の地域からたくさんのエンジニアが、バンガロールで仕事を見つけ働いています。文化:バンガロールは食べ物や茶の屋台、インド各地の料理、ベジタリアン料理、中華や西洋料理など食も豊富であり、ベジタリアンが多い国にもかかわらずケンタッキーフライドチキンでさえも食することができます。多くのクラブ、バー、パブが多く、若者の夜遊びの選択肢の多さもインド随一。欧米のロックバンドがバンガロールにライブに来ることも多いようです。バンガロールはインドで最も現代的な街と言っても過言ではありません。特にMG通り周辺は、州の他の地域とは特に様相を異にしています。ファースト・ フード店やバー、クラブ、ショッピング・モールが立ち並ぶなど派手な雰囲気で、インドではタブー視されている男女が手をつないでいる光景も、ここでは珍しく ありません。娯楽施設もたくさんあるので飽きが来ない街です。MG通り周辺は「インドの渋谷」と密かに言われております。その他:・ココナッツの木が多い。・オートリキシャーがとても多く、どこでも24時間見つけることができます。メーターが付いているので値段交渉もしなくて便利。時間帯や目的地によってはメーターを使おうとしないドライバーがいるので注意です。・CafeDayというインドのスターバックス的な存在のカフェが至るところに存在します。・果物の屋台も多く、安い値段で旬の甘いフルーツが食べられます。・現地の人はレストランのことをホテルと呼びます。・南インドの代表的な食べ物「ドーサ」「イドリー」「ココナッツカレー」などが手ごろな価格で食べられます。まだまだ書きたいことがたくさんありますが、少しでもバンガロールに興味を持って頂けたら幸いです。何か面白いことを見つけたら、バンガロールライフPart2を書こうと思うので、どうぞお楽しみにお待ちください。
