「上に乗っている」「接触」

●「～の上に」という動き
（「接触」状態にする）

Put some water on your napkin.
Can I try it on?
put my tie on



●乗り物にも

get on the bus
get on the train
get on the plane
get on the ship

➫公共の乗り物はサイズが大きいため on
➤板状のものの「上」という感触

cf. 自家用車なら get in the car


He was on a bicyle.
He was on a motorbike.
He was on a horse.



「継続」



「テーブルの上にボール」の基本イメージを横から見れば、天板（線）の上にボールが乗っているように見える。線には面積がないため in は使えず、点でもないため at も無理。線の「上」を表す、接触の on が最適の選択となる。
on の「継続」は、線が持つ「伸びていく」イメージの延長上にある。

➤on at ~ は「継続の on」と「攻撃の at」のコンビネーション



「ステージの on」

She went to Singapore on business. She'll be back on Friday.

➫「ビジネス」という活動のステージ上

on Friday
➫「金曜日」というステージ上で状況が展開

➫「時刻」と違い、曜日など「日」はある程度の幅があるため「ステージ」ととらえられる

on Monday

日が意識される表現にも

●期間や活動なども「ステージ」と見なされる

「支える」



「テーブルの上にボールが乗っている」というイメージ
⇒テーブルがボールを「支えている」ように解釈されている

➤「～に頼る」
depend on ~
rely on ~
count on ~

Spiders live on flies.
➫クモの命が、ハエによって支えられているイメージ

Is it enough to live on?
（それで十分生きて（生活して）いけますか？」


➤何が支えているのを表すのが on 以下
lie on your back
lie on your stomach
on all fours（四つんばいで）
pray on my knees

on purpose（故意に）
on impulse（衝動的に）

（ひとりではやっていけません）



「圧力」



「テーブルの上にボールが乗っている」基本イメージ
⇒「ボールがテーブルを圧迫している」と解釈される

catch の代わりに watch でも可
