Another highlight was the statue of Yoshida Shoin. I happened to come across it, but he was quite an extraordinary person. I admire people who have the ability to inspire others. I looked him up later on. Let me share some information with you. Yoshida Shoin was the headmaster of Shoka Sonjuku, and even Sakamoto Ryoma was one of his disciples. He was a philosopher and educator who was active during the end of the Edo period in Japan. He is considered one of the forerunners of the Meiji Restoration. He incorporated Western thought and knowledge, aiming for a restoration of imperial rule and the expulsion of foreign influences. Yoshida Shoin, this gentleman, apparently died in prison at the age of 34 in 1843. The proverb ‘The nail that sticks out gets hammered down’ seems fitting here… However, having nurtured Sakamoto Ryoma, I may not know much about him, but I truly respect Yoshida Shoin. That was my journey to Yamaguchi Prefecture.

もう一つの見どころはですね、吉田松陰様の像でした。 これはたまたま見つけたんだと思います。 でもね、こういう方、なんかすごい方だったんですよね。 ちょっとこう人を動かした方みたいな、そういう方好きなんですよね。 で、今になってですけども調べてみました。 ちょっと読んでみますね。 吉田松陰は松下村塾の塾長で、あの坂本龍馬も彼の弟子でした。幕末の日本で活動した思想家であり教育者でした。明治維新の先駆者の一人とされています。 彼は西洋の思想や知識を取り入れ、尊王攘夷、つまり天皇を尊重し、外国の侵略を排除するという立場から幕府妥当を目指しました。 そして吉田松陰ね、この方ね、1843年に34歳で獄死したそうですね。 出る杭は打たれる、でしょうか…でも、かの坂本龍馬を育てた方ということで、本当によく存じ上げない方なんですけども尊敬します。 はい、というような私の山口県への旅でした。
