Obesity is a big problem in our country. The numbers of obese children keep rising and something needs to be done about it.

Many people want to lose weight because they do not like the way they look but the more po[censored] r reason is to have a healthy lifestyle. People who are overweight have a higher chance of getting diabetes, heart disease and so many other problems. The best way to stay healthy and live a long and full life is to exercise and eat right.

So many people think that if they only do one and not the other they will be okay but that is not the case. Take for instance someone who is overweight and eats almost 3,000 calories a day. If they exercise for 1 hour a day they might be losing calories but the food is still adding calories back on.

It takes 3,500 calories to burn one pound. Keep in mind that most people burn about 100 calories walking one mile. That means you have to walk 35 miles just to burn one pound of fat! It would be a shame for someone to do so much hard work and exercise and in one day eat all of those calories back.

It is easy to see that eating healthy has a big effect on staying fit. There are so many websites that list what foods the average person should be eating and how much they should have. Food plays a big part in staying healthy. On the other hand, people also believe that if they are skinny they are healthy and do not need to workout. This is not true! Not having extra weight does not mean you are healthy! A lot of skinny people still have health problems, high cholesterol, etc. It takes a balance of the two.

The average person should eat 2,000 calories a day and do cardio and resistance exercise 3 times a week. Not only do people start to look different when they begin working out, they feel better too! Most people go into a workout not looking forward to it and come out feeling great. They have more energy and confidence. Many gyms offer fun classes to take to get in shape. Aerobics, cycling, dance, Pilates, the list goes on. Some even offer water sports, which feel great on a hot summer day.

If that is not your thing, try walking around your community or doing exercise tapes at home. Whatever your taste, keep in mind the best way to live a long and healthy life is to eat right and exercise. Your body needs both!
