Built in red sandstone, Jal Mahal is a five-store[censored] building out of which four floors remain under water when the lake is full in monsoons. The top floor of the palace remains above water. The Chhatri on the roof, which is in rectangular shape, is of Bengal type. The Chhatris on four corners are octagonal in shape. There is a garden with arched passages on the terrace. Semi-octagonal towers were built with an elegant cupola at each corner of the palace.

Built in 1799, Jal Mahal Palace (Water Palace) of Jaipur is noted for its intricate beauty. The palace, situated in the picturesque Mansagar Lake, has the Nahargarh hills in its backdrop. Jal Mahal is famous for the architectural beauty built in the Rajput and Mughal styles of architecture.

At Gaitore (opposite to lake), there are cenotaphs erected over cremation platforms of some of the rulers of Jaipur. They were built by Jai Singh II. The cenotaph monuments are in honour of Pratap Singh, Madho Singh II and Jai Singh II among others.

The Mansagar Lake, situated to the north of Jaipur, lies between the historic city of Amber and Jaipur (state capital of Rajasthan). It has a water spread area of about 300 acres and is enclosed by the Aravalli hills on the three sides of north, west and east while the southern side consists of plains that are intensely inhabited. This big artificial lake was constructed using red sandstone. This lake was formed by constructing a dam between two hills by Sawai Man Singh.

The reserve forest area of the lake catchment has several wild life species which include deer, jungle cat, striped hyena, Indian fox, Indian wild boar and leopards. The lake is a natural habitat for more than 150 species of local and migratory birds. Among them are large flamingo, great crested grebe, pintail, kestrel, coot, redshank, marsh sandpiper, ruff, herring gull, red-breasted flycatcher and grey wagtail. Their numbers had declined over the years with the deterioration of the lake. Now, with the restoration works undertaken, the birds have started visiting the lake again though not to the same degree as in the past

The then rulers developed Jal Mahal as a pleasure spot and they used it for royal duck shooting parties. The Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh used to invite royal dignitaries to this leisure palace. It had also been home to one of the prime ministers of Jaipur estate. In the monsoons, Jal Mahal looks particularly enchanting with its red sandstone set against the water hyacinth-filled lake. The best time to visit Jal Mahal is from October to March. The daily visiting time of the palace is from 9:30 in the morning to 4 in the evening.
