Many farmers fut coins only have the produce, but don't have the means tomarket their produce themselves, Abasstold Wired.co.uk."They have to rely on middlemen who show up and give them both theprice and the buyer. They have no information and no alternativemarket. We wanted to close that information gap between the farmersand the market.

Abass and her team developed a tool that allows farmers to SMSthe number to receive information relating to the retailprice of their products -- updated daily with information for crops (including peas, sugar snaps, avocadoes, passion fruit, peanuts, potatoes, cassava and mangos) sold in markets. But asthey were doing this, they realised that they might be creatinganother problem.

"Farmers don't have storage facilities and they know that thebuyer who comes around to the farm can just go next door and getproduce from someone else. So we could end up taking away the onlyaccess to market they have, Abass explained.
